My grandmother tells stories of growing up in the rural South, surrounded by Blackness, and the unspoken rule that everyone was everyone’s job. If a hog was slaughtered, the meat stretched to as many doorsteps as possible. If there was a newborn, all the women took shifts helping around the house until the mother was back on her feet.
