This being Earth Day, we wanted to share with Peetniks the work we’re doing outside the walls of our LEED Certified roastery here in Alameda. While consumption of quality coffee has steadily been growing at 2% per year, the traditional varieties of Coffea arabica, with their range of fruited notes and hints of chocolate we treasure, have been experiencing a crisis. Though used to hot climates, they simply are no match for global warming or the disease and pests that accompany it. So, in 2012, in a race against time and rising temperatures, Peet’s and 35 other coffee organizations came together to found World Coffee Research. Our mission was to use traditional breeding techniques to develop a more resilient, 100% non-GMO coffee able to survive the challenges of the 21st century. Seven years in, WCR is now supported by 156 companies, and we are collectively watching like expectant parents the global field testing of our F1 hybrids. If successful, these varieties will yield all the flavor qualities we seek while thriving in at-risk environments. Making these heartier, high-quality plants available to coffee farmers around the globe is the next phase of our work. Enabling them to produce more coffee on less available land will ensure they can make a viable living through coffee for years to come. We invite you to track along with us the progress of our F1 hybrids and learn more about WCR at [worldcoffeeresearch.org](.
