Today is the world wide holiday known as Easter Sunday. It is a day that is used to represent and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Chris
Dear Trader,
Today is the world wide holiday known as Easter Sunday. It is a day that is used to represent and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is rare for me to send an email on either religion or politics for many reasons. I realize there are many (including some friends Iâve made over the years) reading this email who do not share the belief that Jesus actually rose from the dead. However, I hope you will indulge me on this Easter Sunday to opine a bit on the subject.
There are only two things I feel like I can have a conversation about with anyone in the world and hold my own; the Bible and Trading. That doesnât mean I know everything about eitherâ¦far from it. But I have spent thousands of hours studying and analyzing each.
There is a lot of history behind this holiday, itâs name, and what it used to be. However, what I want to do is focus on the claim that Jesus rose from the dead. Much of the world stops on Good Friday, and celebrates Easter Sunday, so is this just a big fat fairytale? Wishful thinking? Or, is there really something to this? And while it ultimately deserves far more than an email, and far more than I am going to include in an email, I am going to limit this email to one single point
1. Witness Testimony
You and I were not there 2,000 years ago when Jesus supposedly rose from the dead. And, you will not find a single, solitary member of any jury in our modern day justice system who rendered a guilty verdict against someone on trial for murder because they actually witnessed the murder. Doesnât happen, ever. So what do they render their verdict on? Nothing more than witness testimony. Every. Single. Time.
Some might say ânoâ, there is physical evidence. In a sense, yes. But ultimately, no. How do you know something was the murder weapon? By witness testimony. How do you know where the weapon was found? By witness testimony. How do you know the relationship of the accused with the murder weapon? By witness testimony. Nothing is presented without witness testimony. Witness testimony is the only thing any juror uses to convict someone of murder beyond any reasonable doubt.
The more corroborating witness testimony, the better. The more credible the witnesses, the better.
There were 13 âofficialâ disciples of Jesus. The one who betrayed him died before Jesus did. He was replaced after Jesusâ resurrection with one who had spent a lot of time with the 12 and Jesus himself. All of these witnessed the resurrected Christ, and many wrote extensively on what they experienced, not only about the resurrection, but the life of Christ as well. Matthew, Mark, Luke & John recorded the same event. In addition, Paul (also known as Saul), persecuted and put to death anyone who claimed that Jesus rose from the deadâ¦and yet he ended up corroborating all the testimony of those who actually witnessed the resurrection.
Were the witnesses credible? This is really the only legitimate question about the whole event given the mountain of witness testimony given. In todayâs justice system, there are threats against hostile witnesses. And because of those threats, many key witnesses do not testify out of fear for their lives.
Historians have documented the life and death of every single disciple. It is believed that every single disciple except for John died as a direct result of their unwillingness to deny their own past testimony about who Jesus was and the resurrection. And with John, it wasnât for lack of trying. He was tortured and even sent to a remote island to die. Under the most intense pressure and ultimately death, none of them ever recanted their testimony.
They donât get more credible than that.
But still, we are talking about someone coming back to life from the dead. That in itself is far-fetched. Science cannot back this claim upâ¦but then again, we are talking about Godâ¦who is supernaturalâ¦and if the supernatural were confined by the laws of nature, there could be nothing special about the resurrection (if there was a scientific explanation). So on the one hand, it is a ridiculous notion. But on the other, it is utterly necessary to be a ridiculous notion (naturally speaking) in order to prove that He was who He said He was. So again, we are left with witness testimony.
So on this Easter Sunday, I hope you will consider the testimony, and the hope that exists in those of us who believe. As traders, we are constantly wanting to change our lives for the better by being more successful in trading. But the benefits that trading success can have in your life is not even worth comparing to the joy, peace and hope that a resurrected Jesus gives. Having experienced both, I am a witness to this fact.
Again, to those who donât believe, thank you for indulging me on this Easter Sunday.
Blessings,
Ryan
