Wishing you happy holidays no matter where you are. [View Online]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Forward]( Hi there, “Home for the holidays” seems to have taken a different meaning this year, now that some people are finally able to travel while others, for many reasons, are staying put. This month, we’re looking at the meaning of home: whether it’s through the lens of escaping a dangerous place, making a new home in a country you hope will accept you, or living worlds apart while in the same city - each of our new films and series opens our eyes and minds to a different perspective and hopes for a better life ahead. Wishing you a happy holiday season wherever you may be, - Your fellow Participants [Flee Trailer]( A New Perspective on Migration What is “home” to you? Is it the place where you were born? Is it the place that takes you in, where you settle down? Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s critically acclaimed film, FLEE, is a true story about one Afghan refugee’s persecution and escape from Kabul back in the ‘80s, his resettlement in Copenhagen, the family bonds he creates and the hope that accompanies him. It [reimagines the refugee narrative]( that so often plagues sensational media, and puts a human face to the failed institutions that exploit and neglect the most vulnerable. The film has had so much positive attention in Denmark, there are hopes it may even [sway the debate]( on the country’s migration policy. Now that’s what we call art+activism. You can watch FLEE in theaters now. [READ MORE]( [Headlines + Highlights] [THE FIRST WAVE]( Beyond The First Wave Lately, and especially during this holiday season, we’ve been thinking a lot about our healthcare workers who sacrifice so much and are often away from home on holidays so they can care for us. The critically acclaimed THE FIRST WAVE (now streaming on Hulu) documents the intense emotional toll that the first four months of the COVID-19 pandemic took on our courageous frontline medical professionals. Now, we’re taking a stand to support the mental health of the ones who care for us. With the launch of our [First Wave Impact Campaign]( earlier this month, our Participant community has sent hundreds of letters in support of the [Lorna Breen Act]( which we’re thrilled was approved last week in Congress. We also shared wonderful [messages of gratitude]( via our Gratitude Hotline, and are pushing State Medical Boards to ensure that healthcare workers have access to the mental health support they need. Will you join us? [TAKE ACTION]( [Vincent Chin]( Vincent Chin: Being Asian in the U.S. In 1980’s Detroit, tensions were high between white auto workers and the newly arrived Japanese workforce who were unfairly blamed for taking away automotive industry jobs. On a night that would become a turning point in Asian American and civil rights history, Chinese American engineer Vincent Chin was attacked and murdered by two white men who assumed he was of Japanese descent. We’re honored to bring this compelling story to light with the help of Oscar®-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao who has the vision and sensitivity to untangle the complexities of racism and injustice while honoring Vincent Chin’s legacy in an impactful way. Located just a few blocks from each other in the racially segregated city of Milwaukee, predominantly Black Messmer High School and largely white Shorewood High have different realities. But when both schools face a shortage of football players, the two teams decide to come together as one. Our new documentary, MESSWOOD, premiered last month at [Doc NYC](. Set against the backdrop of 2020’s racial reckoning, the film explores what it means to commit, persevere, and come together as a team - a message that transcends the sports world. [READ MORE]( [Headlines + Highlights] [Whetstone Radio Collective]( Here, There and Everywhere The concept of “home” is nuanced and complex. From the way that food makes us who we are, to art that has been uprooted from its original home, to the Eurocentric bias inherently found in photography - we’re checking out how artists are exploring “home” with their creativity. - From Stephen Satterfield, host of the 2021 Netflix docu-series High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America, comes a new food podcast network called [Whetstone Radio Collective](. The shows explore the origin stories of food from around the world, the communities that established them, and the ones preserving those culinary traditions. - With mounting calls to museums for repatriation of indigenous artifacts from around the world, 3D scanning has surged as a solution. But could reproducing these objects simply become [another form of colonialism]( - A new installation in Atlanta, [#ChingaLaMigra]( features 1,996 hand cut and painted butterflies that represent the capacity at the Stewart Detention Center, one of the largest for-profit immigrant detention centers in the U.S. - [These three photographers]( are pushing back against the myth that dark skin is harder to photograph - a bias that has been around since film was invented.
