Your financial support does more than support public schools â it builds bridges across divides and helps students build bridges to a bright future. One room schoolhouses served as meeting halls for town councils early in America’s history. Today, most states have polling places located in schools – making them the place where democracy happens. Schools are home to community groups booking a space for use after hours: a public meeting in the auditorium, a sports event in the gym, a book club in the library, or a craft demonstration in an art room. Schools that teach children during the day may also teach adults at night – whether they are learning computer skills for a new job, learning how to paint as a new hobby, or learning a new language. The school as community hub isn’t a new idea – but now it’s more important than ever before. At a time when the walls between people can seem insurmountable, schools are places where people still come together. A place where curriculum and learning activities contribute to community development, and community development activities enrich learning. Schools should be a place for building bridges. Bridges that connect students to each other, to their local communities, and to the wider world. Parents for Public Schools (PPS) works to build those bridges by empowering parents to become advocates. Tanya, a PPS Parent since 2015, speaks honestly about her start: “I wasn’t involved in my school until the need was at my doorstep. I wanted my children to succeed. The PTA wasn’t giving me what I needed. I attended my first Parent Engagement Program (PEP) and it changed everything. Now, I’m a passionate advocate. I care about my community. I’m a taxpayer. I don’t just care about my children – I care about all children. I want to support the next generation.” PPS believes that building one bridge shouldn’t come at the expense of another. Public schools need the tools to succeed. When public schools don’t have resources, that’s a real loss for the students, their communities, and all of us. Let’s build bridges and maintain them. Strong public schools build strong communities – places where people want to live and where businesses want to locate. Our mission is to secure a high-quality public education for every child. We help parents and communities build bridges that support education – and support each other. Erin, a PPS Parent in North Carolina, says: “I’m building my community by sharing what I learn from PPS with other parents. I’m a resource and I’m helping others. PPS is a way to connect with schools and build awareness in the community of the importance of public schools.” Bridge building is complicated work. Parents and schools need support, knowledge, and resources to help their students. Supporting parents and public schools helps all students, no matter where they’re from, to become bridge users, bridge builders, and bridge maintainers. PPS can’t do this work without your support. Please join us in building bridges in communities across the country. Your financial support does more than support public schools – it builds bridges across divides and helps students build bridges to a bright future.
