As a sometimes-practicing student of Buddhism, I try to think of the inevitable destruction as a helpful reminder that nothing is permanent. Attachments are our only cause of suffering. [All palaces are temporary palaces]( HOWEVER. Sometimes you just want to enjoy your new couch for a while before tiny razor claws begin shredding it to bits!! Amirite? So here's what I'm trying next: Along with gently redirecting shredding behavior to nearby cat trees and cardboard scratchers (this is the first step), I'm going to... rub my dirty laundry on the cat trees. Why? Apparently, adding a layer of your own scent can make a cat tree or scratcher extra-attractive. (Even if your scent is less "Fancy French Perfume," and more "Old Spice That Wore Off 5 Hours Ago Battles Garlic Pasta for Dinner.") Am I nuts to try this? Have YOU tried this? Scratch n' sniff,
Lianna * My best friend Julia and I have this phrase tattooed on our arms in each other's handwriting. P.S. I think if you're here, you probably know this, but declawing your cats to keep them from shredding is not an ethical option (and good vets these days will not declaw cats). Declawing causes both acute (immediate) and chronic, lifelong pain. Imagine having your fingernails removed at the root. The nerves are still there. :( P.P.S.
