Broken English. March 15, 2024 [WEBSITE]( | [UNSUBSCRIBE]( Broken English. Even more broken Spanish. (Mine.) “Gasoline For the Soul” CHRIS CAMPBELL Dear Reader, His name is Jorge. Yesterday, during breakfast, we met the manager of our hotel… The one and only Hotel Planeta Sona, an eco-lodge and restaurant in Quepos. We more or less stumbled upon the place by chance. Jorge told us the hotel funds an organization that runs a small farm 20 minutes away. They’re using permaculture principles to revitalize the land. Adjacent to the farm is the Naranjito River, one of the most important rivers in Costa Rica -- the old Costa Rican trade route. After a few minutes of talking with the manager, he offered to take us to see the farm as soon as we finished breakfast. Just like that. Before we made it to the farm, he stopped to let us look at a rare, endangered bird that camouflages itself on fence posts from Toucans. At first, it looked as if the bird was gone. The guide, excited for us to see it, deflated. It wasn't at the post it usually stood at. Then, on our way back… in all its majesty… we saw it. He then took us to the farm, where the volunteers showed us around. In less than a year, they’ve built and grown…. Greenhouses. Bathrooms. Casas. Rainwater catches. Pineapples. Melons. Manually-pollinated sticks of vanilla. We walked a trail to the river. Our guide told us to listen to the river. “I come here often alone. I always stop to listen,” he said. “It feels good to me. It is gasoline for the soul.” San Salvador In El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador, the city’s urban design is so poor that each voyage into a roundabout feels like an extreme sport. (Who needs skydiving when you can just rent a car in El Salvador?) And, no less, every parking space looks like a jail cell. Only a few years ago, the streets of San Salvador were ruled by gangs. That’s changed with Bukele. Despite the questions surrounding the self-proclaimed “world's coolest dictator.” Swords are being beaten into plowshares. But this is a population that’s been so entrenched in violence and chaos, there’s a sense that they aren’t quite ready to fully trust it. On one hand, most El Salvadorans I came across seem quite optimistic about the future of their country. On the other, I’ve never seen so many random strangers cry in public. Yes, Bukele is wildly popular. Yes, the entire country is under construction (some parts more than others). Word on the street: The time to invest, if you’re into that kind of thing, is now. (Find a good lawyer. Learn Spanish.) External Advertisement The #1 Energy Passive Income Investment for 2024 It's not a stock, bond or private company... But this little-known alternative investment could hand you BIG MONTHLY INCOME from the oil and gas surge in 2024. [CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS]( Costa Rica In Costa Rica, some parts of the country have amazing infrastructure. It’s also more expensive than most of the US in many places. Also, the country is dealing with a sharp upswing in gang violence as cocaine floods in and factions fight over turf. Growing up, Costa Ricans are taught about their country’s exceptionalism in a region ripped asunder by chaos and corruption. Now however the recent crime, as federal prosecutor Mauricio Boraschi told the LA Times, is “making us question our identity. We’re looking into a mirror saying: ‘Who are we? And how are we going to get out of this?’” Yes, there's magic in Costa Rica. Many say the violence claims are overblown. Investing here, like many places overseas, is tricky. One expat we met ended up hiring four lawyers, each one to keep an eye on the others and check their work. (In the end, she still got scammed.) The World is a Big Place It's been more than six weeks since I left home… Crypto conferences. AI meetings. Private cities. Special economic zones. Bitcoin beaches. Crypto jungles. Hundreds of conversations. Broken English. Even more broken Spanish. (Mine.) Although I’m still compiling all of my notes, here are some initial thoughts. → Crypto is here to stay. The world is a big place. The future has billions of centers. → Decentralization is the trend. Charter cities and special economic zones are nothing new. San Marino in Italy is the oldest. Catawba in the Carolinas is the most intriguing in the US. (Native tribes creating digital economic zones in the US.) Prospera in Honduras. And more. This trend will only grow and reverberate out for centuries. → AI is the opportunity of a lifetime. It’s an opportunity for us to stop doing so much busywork, wasting so much time, and stop making so many mistakes -- and get back to the basics. (Ironically, live closer to how we did before technology.) →Is it the schools? One talk in February stuck out in my mind. Mid-school year has more teen suicides than July. The speaker made a compelling case that schools are the elephant in the room. Bigger than social media. → The importance of rituals: I made a friend, Reynolds, who insisted that we start every experience with an intention and every meal with things we are grateful for. I've continued this practice. Even alone. Next week, we'll dive into more specific opportunities. Including the best spots to buy land overseas.
