Vote: Should I do it? [Altucher Confidential] February 28, 2024 [WEBSITE]( | [UNSUBSCRIBE]( Should I put GMOs in my mouth to kill cavities forever? Vote below. Decide my fate. [Hero_Image] BCS3-L1: Space-Age Dentistry in Honduras [Chris Campbell] CHRIS CAMPBELL Dear Reader, “Cavities were cured in 1985, and no one knows it yet.” Sounds like an ad on some conspiracy website or some fringe Youtuber with a crazed look in one eye… . But, no. This is a statement from a small biotech company out of Berkeley, California. AND, the thing: They make a pretty compelling case. Why We Get Cavities In the 1980s, scientists discovered that cavity-producing bacteria -- streptococcus mutans -- creates lactic acid when it metabolizes sugar. If too much of this bacteria gathers in one place, the lactic acid destroys your teeth. That’s why we get cavities. [pub] To fix this, they genetically engineered a specific type of mouth-living bacteria -- streptococcus mutans -- to produce ethanol instead of lactic acid. It was a success, but the strain wasn’t strong enough. It would get overtaken by armies of its foes. So, the scientists Spartan-trained this bacteria until it was strong enough to outcompete native mouth bacteria by a wide margin -- and without spreading anywhere else in the body. According to the company: “All research suggests that a one-time brushing of this GMO strain onto the teeth will dramatically reduce, or entirely eliminate, dental caries.” [pub] Back in the 80’s, volunteers deliberately exposed their mouths with this strain. To this day, they’ve noticed no adverse reactions. And, far as I can tell, they’ve been cavity-free. This morning, I had an appointment with a doctor that provides this treatment in Roatan, Honduras. One question: Should I do it? Cast your votes below. First, a little more info. [Click here for the full story on Apple <<]( BCS3-L: Space Age Dentist BCS3-L1 (brand name Lumina) was originally discovered by Professor Jeffrey Hillman in the 1980s and was later acquired by Lantern Bioworks. The bacteria works by producing a weak antibiotic (mutacin-1140) to kill competing bacteria, metabolizing sugar into alcohol instead of acid, and preventing gene transfer to other bacteria. [pub] Lantern aims to sell Lumina first to biohackers in Prospera, Honduras for $20,000 per dose. (Although Vitalians get a steep discount. How steep? I’m about to find out.) They hope to get FDA approval as a probiotic supplement so it can be sold more widely for a few hundred dollars per dose by 2025. There is some concern about safety given the genetic modifications and alcohol production, but testing so far in a grad student and in animals has not shown issues. More testing would still be needed to confirm safety and efficacy. Decide My Fate Should I donate my mouth to science? No more cavities for the rest of my life? Risk worth taking? What do you think?
