How crypto can save Main Street. [Altucher Confidential] October 13, 2023 [WEBSITE]( | [UNSUBSCRIBE]( A local, blockchain-based stock market would not just be a tech evolution, but a social and cultural one, too. [Hero_Image] Beyond FTX: Crypto’s Main Street Moment There is MASSIVE change happening within our company. And I want you to [hear about this – from me]( – otherwise this new policy could blindside you. This has gone into effect immeditaly, so I want you to understand exactly what it will mean for you. [So please, watch this video for my full announcement.]( [Chris Campbell] CHRIS CAMPBELL Dear Reader, “Have you ever heard of those beer stock exchange bars?” I asked. He hadn’t. “There are a few in the US. It’s where the price of beer fluctuates based on demand. It just gamifies buying beer. It’s fun.” “Ok. But what does this have to do with crypto?” I had a conversation with an acquaintance the other day about crypto. We talked about FTX. We talked about crypto scams. We talked about Sam Bankman-Fried. We talked about FTX some more. We talked about Caroline Ellison. We talked more about scams. FTX. FTX. FTX. Then regulation. Then self-custody. The usual stuff. Then he told me to convince him on crypto. So I had to appeal to his interests. A little about him: Millennial. Quasi-liberal. Critical of crypto. Slight interest in social justice issues. Invests in the stock market. Hates corporate America. Would consider himself a localist. I brought up the promises of tokenization -- the process of converting rights to an asset into a digital token on a blockchain. Urgent From James Altucher! Hey, it’s James Altucher. I just announced a massive new change to Altucher’s Investment Network, and as one of my readers I wanted to make sure you know what’s going on. [Click here now to see my urgent announcement.]( Tokenize Your Town “My point is,” I said, “imagine your town has its own stock market.” He crossed his arms. The wheels were spinning. I continued. “Would you rather have equity in a local coffee shop on the ground floor or buy shares of Starbucks?” I asked. “What if you could invest in your favorite local bar or pizza parlor? Would you rather speculate on Gamestop or on local entrepreneurs?” “Wait… Why can’t we do that now?” he asked. It’s a good question, with an easy answer. Technically, you can. But… Traditional investment avenues in local businesses, especially for small amounts, are ridiculously cumbersome. Though traditional finance is already moving in this direction… With equity crowdfunding, Community Public Offerings, and specialized local platforms… Blockchain has the potential to take it to an entirely new level. The Tokenized Township In a tokenized world, assets that are traditionally illiquid, like shares in a small local business, can be traded more easily. This makes them more attractive to a broader range of investors, increasing capital inflow to local businesses. Tokenizing a local business's assets or equity can also allow for fractional ownership, allowing individuals to invest with smaller amounts. Another benefit… Traditional stock markets can take days to settle transactions. With blockchain, settlements can be nearly instantaneous, improving the efficiency of the local stock market. Also, smart contracts can be programmed to ensure regulatory compliance and to minimize fraud. This means local businesses can automatically adhere to investment regulations without the need for extensive legal consultation. It doesn’t necessarily have to be your town, either. Imagine you could easily and quickly invest in your favorite restaurant in NYC or Chicago… Even if you don’t live there. An individual from another city can invest in a local business 5,000 miles away, thus expanding the potential investor base. Also there’s the potential for interoperability of assets. Meaning, tokenized assets can be integrated with other digital platforms or ecosystems. For example, special rewards or dividends from a local business could be spent in various local digital ecosystems, promoting local economies. There’s also infinite potential for innovation. With tokenization, new financial products can be introduced quickly. Local businesses could band together and create bundled asset tokens, for example, diversifying risk for investors and promoting collaborative growth in the community. No less, plenty of room for helping to fund local solutions to problems. Equity holders can vote on where a certain amount is spent -- whether it’s solving homelessness or tackling the local drug problem. Tokenization, through this lens, has the potential to put the power back into local communities. Furthermore, a local stock market based on blockchain would not just be a technological evolution but a social and cultural one. It would intertwine businesses and their communities in a deeper, more meaningful way, fostering local growth and innovation. In short… I think I converted him to the dark side.
