[Chris Campbell] CHRIS CAMPBELL Dear Reader, “We don’t have a job for you,” my new boss said. It was my first day. I thought he was firing me. “Huh? What do you mean?” I asked. He slapped a stack of books on my new desk. “Read these, float around a bit, learn the business, and then tell me what you want to do here. Take three weeks.” “OK.” I already knew what I wanted to do. But I took the opportunity to read the books and learn the business. That was in 2012. We weren’t called Paradigm Press back then… But we had the same independent, contrarian, and rebellious spirit we still carry today. First, some little-known history… A Marketplace of Ideas Most don’t know this… But our parent company -- Agora, inc. -- has been around since 1979. 44 years. No business plan. Not even a back-of-the-napkin sketch. And, back then, Bill was more than just the founder: He was also the plumber, the handyman, and the mailroom clerk. (In other words, whatever he needed to be.) Since then, the company has survived three recessions and a dot-com bubble burst. It’s seen the full rise of personal computers, the Internet, mobile phones, social media, and the Everything Store. (And adapted to all of them.) It’s seen countless giants -- leaders in their respective industries -- collapse due to technological shifts, changing consumer preferences, competition, or corruption. It witnessed the rise and fall of Blockbuster (28 years), Palm (18 years), Blackberry (38 years), Enron (16 years), Worldcom (19 years), Yahoo (22 years), and more. It’s also seen the breakdown of even the seemingly-hardiest legacy companies like Woolworth (118 years), Bear Stearns (85 years), and Thomas Cook (178 years)... And it lived to tell the tales. One of Agora’s “secrets” was its culture of decentralized decision-making. Bonner stood against the grain of typical leadership. Instead of dictating every move, he sought collaborators -- individuals eager to confront challenges head-on, craft their own solutions, and trailblaze He believed in the power of independent thinkers who dared to dive deep, challenge norms, and make bold predictions. And then he gave them control over their own destinies. It was a far cry from the usual corporate culture that focused more on authority than ideas.
