You may not have long to prepare. [So click here to see an urgent rebroadcast of my announcement.]( [Chris Campbell] CHRIS CAMPBELL Dear Reader, Benjamin Button was born an old man and aged backward. He became younger as time progressed… Until he eventually becomes a baby at the end of his life. Strange idea. Even weirder to see Brad Pitt do it in action. I was reminded of this story when word got out that states around the US are implementing a new type of bond. They’re calling them “baby bonds.” But I prefer Benjamin Button Bonds. The idea: Each child born is given thousands of dollars in an account by the government. Over time, that money grows. By the time they’re an adult, that money will be enough to give them a good start in life. What does it have to do with Benjamin Button, you ask ? I’ll tell you in a moment. First, crucially… It’s Happening The idea was first floated by economists William Darity and Darrick Hamilton in 2010 -- as a mechanism to reduce the racial wealth gap in the United States. From there, this fringe idea rapidly snowballed into policy. Senator Cory Booker introduced legislation in 2018 and again in 2021 with what’s called the "American Opportunity Accounts Act." Booker’s proposal? Give each baby $1,000, with annual deposits of up to $2,000 based on family income. He estimated that someone born in a family under the federal poverty level would have $46,000 by 18. As of February 2023, baby bond proposals have passed in Washington, DC, Connecticut, and California. They’ve also been introduced at the federal level and in eight additional states. Yes, there’s precedent… In 2002, the UK government introduced the Child Trust Fund program, where every newborn child received an initial deposit from the government, and parents, family, and friends could also contribute. And yet… the program was all but discontinued for new accounts in 2011. (Wonder why.) [pub] Governors warn of “Biden Blackouts” [James Altucher]( A former advisor to the CIA and Pentagon just made this dark prediction: Calamity Joe’s sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline [His Evidence Here]( was suicide. In the next 75 days, Americans will face fuel shortages… …widespread BLACKOUTS… …empty grocery shelves… …up to $1000 energy bills… …drained retirement accounts, and… …a massive crime wave. [>>Welcome to Biden’s American Energy Armageddon<<]( The Bigger Problem While Baby Bonds sound nice on paper -- just like Universal Basic Income -- the devil’s in the details. It MIGHT be good if it meant we would reduce overall spending. (Fat chance.) It MIGHT be good if it decreases inflation. (Ditto.) What are the unintended consequences? What dire incentives will this create? Won’t it make inflation way worse? All of those are good questions. BUT… They don’t hack at the root. The REAL problem is this: Baby Bonds get everything backwards. And it means the difference between dystopia and prosperity. More tomorrow… [HINT: While universal basic income schemes are gaining in popularity, the dollar teeters on the edge.
