CAMPBELL Dear Reader, It was a bright summer day when a guy⌠⌠letâs call him Sam⌠Found himself at the airport, eagerly awaiting his flight to a long-awaited vacation destination⌠⌠let's say RoatĂĄn. Standing in a line that snaked back to the baggage claim, Sam was anxiously stealing glances at his watch when a strange pattern caught his attention: Random people would approach a machine, briefly lean into it, and then stroll past security as if they owned the place. Intrigued, Sam looked back at one of the airport staff members, a young woman about his age, and inquired. "Oh, they're Clear members," she said. "They bypass regular security checks by scanning their retinas.â âI see,â said Sam. âThanks.â Sam was both curious and uneasy. On one hand, who wouldnât want to breeze past the line like the sultan of the skies? The allure of convenience and time saved was undeniable. Yet, on the other hand, the thought of surrendering such an intimate part of himself to a digital entity had big-time 1984 vibes. Sam decided to do some research on the company⌠But what he discovered sent shivers down his spine. Clear, a nearly four-billion-dollar company, has ambitions far beyond the airport. Their vision is to claim dominion over the entire digital identity landscape -- expanding their reach to sporting arenas, concert halls, hotels, and anywhere else it could lay its tentacles. Sam had to admit: the premise was appealing. As an avid traveler, juggling IDs, usernames, passports, and passwords was a daily struggle. But he believed the extent of Clearâs data collection should raise eyebrows. Beyond simplifying the travel experience, Clear tracked its users' every preference -- their favorite foods and beverages at sports stadiums, their credit card details, and even who they attended games with. Despite his warnings, his friends, coworkers, and even Grandma admitted to becoming Clear members. âItâs just so much easier,â they would tell him. Thatâs when Sam began seeking out alternatives. Finding none, he set out to create it. Enter Worldcoin. Founded by none other than the co-founder of ChatGPT, Sam Altman. Your Eyeballs (Donât) Belong to Us? For the record, I made that story up. I have no clue about the origin story of Altmanâs Worldcoin⌠But, judging by the coinâs philosophy, it seems close enough. Clear is the enemy because you have to trust them not to fiddle with your sensitive data. Worldcoin is the savior because you donât have to trust them at all. Iâll explain. Worldcoinâs aim is to empower individuals with ownership over their own digital identities. How? By scanning people's irises and creating a unique digital identity, or "world ID," stored securely on the blockchain. According to the Worldcoin team, they cannot access the iris scan even if they tried. Itâs cloaked behind enough cryptography to melt the NSA headquarters. The key to Worldcoin's vision lies in its network of eye-scanning orbs. [ALC] These sleek devices, designed by a legendary Apple alum, provide an efficient and secure means of capturing individual identity data, offering resistance to fraud while ensuring only one identity per person. The biometric data is processed inside the orb and then sent to their data stores, where it is then deleted from the Orb. But this isn't just about scanning irises and creating a profile. Worldcoinâs grander purpose is to eliminate poverty by making Universal Basic Income feasible for all. Ricardo Macieira, a general manager for the Worldcoin team, said this: "I donât think we are going to be the ones generating universal basic income. If we can do the infrastructure that allows for governments or other entities to do so we would be very happy.â They expect that companies and governments will pay Worldcoin to use its digital identity network. A ticketing company, for instance, could use Worldcoin's network, allowing event organizers to issue tickets tied to individual identities. This way, people attending the event can be verified without disclosing personal information, preventing ticket fraud or reselling issues. Putting that potential can of worms aside⌠There are obvious (and non-obvious) concerns to Worldcoinâs approach. Secret Gold Back currency RUINING Bidenâs plans for a digital dollar? [James Altucher]( What Iâm holding in my hand is a completely new form of money⌠As we speak, it's being used as an alternative currency across the U.S. minting in places like Utah, New Hampshire and Nevada⌠And since itâs made out of a thinly printed sheet of REAL gold... It may be the single best way to protect your wealth from Bidenâs plan for a government controlled digital dollar. Thatâs why, I want to offer to send one to you today. But since I have a limited number I need you to respond to [this message]( by Wednesday at midnight. [Iâve recorded a short 2 minute message that explains everything here.]( Is Privacy Doomed? Already, some 2 million people have scanned their eyeballs for money, mostly in Latin America, Afrida, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Not without backlash, either. Just this week, Kenya [suspended]( Worldcoin operations for public safety concerns. More countries will probably follow. Not to mention itâs already received no shortage of criticism: [pub] Finally⌠[The Block]( conducted a revealing interview with the Worldcoin team. The Worldcoin team didnât anticipate the black market that quickly arose where people were selling their verified credentials. In May, reports revealed that Chinese people were purchasing iris scans from Africans for as little as $30 a pop. The team also admitted that the Orb might not be the most ideal way to go about digital identity, but itâs the best option they have. Moreover, despite claims they are going to decentralize the Worldcoin network and set it free, theyâve set up a foundation in the Cayman Islands. Now⌠Do I like the idea of Worldcoin better than the idea of Clear? Sure. Does that mean Iâm rushing to scan my eyeballs for 25 Worldcoins? Nope. With the rise of AI, digital ID to differentiate humans from bots will become more and more popular. But I, for one, will keep my eyeballs to myself. The digital revolution is underway. But that doesnât have to spell doom for your privacy. More tomorrow. Until next time, [Chris Campbell] Chris Campbell
