You’re [invited]( Nature’s Slip ‘N Slide Superconductors, nature's perfect conductors, are the superheroes of the material world. Think about when you slide down a slide. If the slide is smooth, you go fast and it's a lot of fun. But, if the slide is rough, you slow down and it's not as fun. Electricity is the same way. When it moves through wires, if the "slide" (or in this case, the wire) is rough, some of that electricity turns into heat and is wasted. Superconductivity is like having a perfectly smooth, super slick slide for electricity. It can zoom along without slowing down or turning into heat. So, all the electricity gets to where it needs to go without being wasted. So what’s the big deal? Well, for starters… One-tenth of the world’s electricity is lost in the grid. That’s a big number. That’s about as much as computing consumes around the world. That’s also about as much as the entire aviation industry consumes, too. But, in this case, that energy isn’t used. It’s turned to heat and wasted. Superconductivity fixes that. Superconductors can also expel magnetic fields from their interiors, causing them to float or levitate in the presence of magnetic fields. This phenomenon, known as the Meissner effect, allows for frictionless transportation systems like maglev trains and more efficient energy storage in magnetic levitation energy storage systems (MLESS). Of course, there’s a catch. Rise of LK-99 Some special materials -- yes, called superconductors -- only show this remarkable property at very low temperatures, usually close to absolute zero. Maintaining that temperature is energy-intensive and expensive. (Somewhat defeating the point.) That’s why a “room-temperature” superconductor is the holy grail. If we can reach superconductivity at normal temperatures, then we’re off to the races. Some have said it’s impossible.
