The race to regulate AI [Altucher Confidential] April 10, 2023 [WEBSITE]( | [UNSUBSCRIBE]( The big problem - and opportunity - is that the current Internet isn’t ready for this type of sea change. [Please click here to learn how to claim it.]( — Customer Service, Paradigm Press [Chris Campbell] CHRIS CAMPBELL Dear Reader, As the current AI regulation debate rages on, it’s only a matter of time until most realize it’s pretty moot. Not all the way moot. But pretty much so. Any limits on AI development that does not include China and the rest of the world will be like trying to contain a virus with a chain link fence. That’s not to say we shouldn’t regulate it in some way… or that the situation is hopeless. But the solutions are more likely to come from the private sector. And perhaps from places most won’t expect. (More on that in a moment.) One story of high-tech crime illustrates just how hairy this could get. Pig Butchers The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) recently announced it seized a whopping $112 million in cryptocurrencies that had been drained through an infamous romance scam. Dubbed the “Pig Butchering Scam,” it's a twisted game of manipulation and deception that targets unsuspecting individuals on dating sites and social media. The scammers pose as attractive and successful professionals, seducing their victims before luring them into fake investment platforms. This particular style of scam originated in China, but has rapidly transformed into a global racket over the past few years. In fact, investigators believe that the UK is now a hotspot for pig butchers, with over 100 shell companies orchestrating these scams.. In many cases -- as occurs all over Asia -- the scammers themselves are also victims; tricked into flying away from their homes for a job that turns out to be a trap. From there, they’re (sometimes literally) handcuffed to their desks, forced to perform under the threat of extreme violence. That’s frightening. But here’s the most frightening bit. (Yes, it has to do with AI.) Attention! Before You Read Any Further… [Click here for more...]( Hey, it’s James. Before you read any further in today’s issue, an urgent situation needs your immediate attention. [To see how to claim your upgrade, just click here now.]( Once you’re done with that, read on to see today’s issue… They’re Just Using Scripts Nearly all of these scams are performed through chat. The pushers manipulate victims using a scripted manual provided by the criminal organization. Astonishingly, using only these scripts they’re able to bilk thousands -- sometimes up to millions -- of dollars from unsuspecting victims. Imagine what happens when these organizations figure out how to get AI to execute these scripts, constantly refining them with each iteration. AI doesn’t eat. It doesn’t sleep. The pig butchers in Myanmar won’t care much about AI regulation in the US when they replace their indentured servants with server racks. But how do you fix it? The Future of AI AI isn’t coming. It’s here. And tomorrow’s AI is probably going to blow our minds. Put side-by-side, ChatGPT may end up looking like a stick with a pointy end compared to a F-22 Raptor. The big problem is that the Internet as it stands isn’t ready for this type of sea change. When it comes to scams like pig butchering, crypto is framed as the problem. (And, to be fair, it is a big part.) But, in the future, it could very well offer a solution. And that offers a huge opportunity for those who can get ahead of the curve.
