âThe Patriot Act on steroids.â [Altucher Confidential] March 27, 2023 [WEBSITE]( | [UNSUBSCRIBE]( Will a TikTok ban solve the problem? No. Here are three things that will. [Hero_Image] âTik-Tok Banâ is a Trojan Horse By Chris Campbell Patent #11,219,620: The Most Valuable Patent In History? I believe this could over time become the single most valuable patent in history. [Thatâs because this patent is just some of the exciting work being done by a company which is developing treatments for one of the biggest and most common diseases in Americaâ¦]( A disease which impacts 54 million people, or about 26% of the adult population in America. CAMPBELL “What is the future of TikTok?” That’s the big question this week. Recently, the Biden administration demanded that ByteDance sell TikTok to a US owner or face a complete ban. You’ll recall that, in 2020, Trump issued an executive order demanding the same thing. It was shot down in the courts and by Biden. (Trump got made fun of for it, too.) The concern, according to officials, isn’t just that China could use TikTok to spy on Americans. It’s that they could use the algorithms to push misinformation and hateful anti-US rhetoric. To that end… On March 7, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), alongside 10 other senators, introduced the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology (RESTRICT) Act. The RESTRICT Act would authorize the secretary of commerce to review and prohibit any “transactions” between US citizens and foreign adversaries that COULD pose risks to US national security. Senator Marco Rubio, who spearheaded a previous bill to ban TikTok, said this: “As it is written right now, it will not ban TikTok and it will probably make it impossible to ever ban TikTok.” Perhaps he’s onto something, but in a way he’s not anticipating. Some say it’s a result of Meta and Google lobbying… Apparently TikTok ate too much of their lunch. Interestingly, Instagram (owned by Facebook/Meta) just ended its content creator fund, called Reels, which was launched to compete with TikTok. Journalist David Hobby says that the app’s “ability to quickly network and inform citizens is also one of the reasons behind the ban.”’ Over 100 million Americans use the app, he says, and it’s not controlled by the US. (Meh.) Some suggest it’s going to be used as a backdoor way to ban Bitcoin. And others suggest that TikTok is just a red herring. Unfortunately, the worst-case scenario seems closest to the truth: The true motive of RESTRICT is to slip through a bill that gives the government authority over ALL forms of communication, and grants unlimited powers to shut those down if they are deemed a risk to national security. The Solution? Would RESTRICT solve our TikTok problems? Doubtful. After all… You’re probably reading this on a device made in China. How many guarantees are there that it isn’t full of Chinese spyware? (I’ll give you a hint: ZERO.) If they really wanted to solve the problem of privacy, misinformation, and unruly algorithms, then the US needs: 1.] Privacy laws regulating data brokers. 2.] Transparency around data collection 3.] Open source algorithms. There are plenty of reasons why we won’t see those things (Meta and Google being only two)... But they would fix the “TikTok problem.” One thing the government is great at, however, is solving a problem with an even bigger one. And, in the end, thatâs the most likely scenario out of the TikTok fiasco. Until next time, [Chris Campbell] Chris Campbell
