Franceâs Macon Loses His Parliamentary Majority Were you forwarded this email? [Sign-up to Rude Awakening here.]( [Unsubscribe]( [The Rude Awakening] The Dominoes Continue To Fall - Franceâs President Macron was re-elected in late April 2022.
- Macronâs party is still the French Parliamentâs largest.
- But without an absolute majority, his agenda may go nowhere for five years. [See What To Do Here Before It Happens]( Sean Ring Editor, Rude Awakening Good morning on this fine Tuesday! I hope you had a wonderful long weekend. And I hope all the hard-working fathers had a well-deserved, restful day on Sunday. We rented a car this weekend. On Saturday, we traveled to Alba and Sale San Giovanni. Alba looks like a city out of a Christmas catalog and is known worldwide for its excellent truffles. Next, since Pam loves lavender, we went to Sale San Giovanni to see its purple fields. Credit: Sean Ring As weâve done that in Provence and the Cotswolds, it didnât excite me all that much. But she was happy, and thatâs what matters. On Sunday, we drove up to Cervinia in the far north of Italy. Credit: Sean Ring There, we got a clouded view of the Matterhornâs big backside. As usual, the pizza, salad, and desserts tasted like angelic elves crafted them in Godâs Own Kitchen. While we drove through the Aosta Valley to get to Cervinia, we noticed the signs were in Italian, English, and French. I love seeing that mesh of cultures up here. But unbeknownst to me, the French were taking matters into their own hands on Sunday. But First, ScoMo Gets the Heave-Ho As youâve read in this newsletter for ages, you know what I think: - The Westâs policies toward Russia are reckless.
- Americaâs energy policies are ludicrous.
- Europe is risking a cold winter and total industry shutdown to please its DC masters.
- Russia can and does ship its oil and gas eastward, losing no revenue despite sanctions.
- Western politicians will be made to pay for their stupidity with their jobs and reputations. The final point on politicians losing their jobs started with the Australian elections. Then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison (ScoMo), who shut his country down for no reason whatsoever, got his head handed to him a month ago. By Australian standards, his nearly four-year term was quite long. (The Aussies like changing governments nearly as much as the Italians.) But Australia being Australia, they replaced Morrison with a left-wing government that may already be on its way out. From [Sky News Australiaâs Chris Kenny]( [Australian Prime Minister] Albanese and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen signed a letter to the United Nations promising to deliver cuts to Australiaâs emissions by at least 43 percent by 2030. âSo that's it, rather than ensure you have enough electricity, no greenouts, and that your electricity is affordable,â Mr. Kenny said. âAlbanese and Bowen, in the middle of an energy crisis, have bowed to the UN and promised to cut our emissions by even more. âThe political timing is unthinkable.â We may see this government get thrown out before too long. But they were only the first. Something funny happened on the way to the French forum. Macron Won the French Presidency⦠I was disappointed when Macron defeated Marine Le Pen in last month's French presidential election. I had hoped the French would do something bold and allow Le Pen to change things up. Alas, they didnât. Macron beat Le Pen, but not as severely as in their previous match. Though Macron is the first president in twenty years to be re-elected, some French political watchers were worried heâd not have an easy time in this past Sundayâs parliamentary elections. Those political watchers were proved correct. Though Macronâs party won the most seats in the National Assembly, he lost his absolute majority. That means heâll have trouble whenever he wants to pass any controversial law, such as raising the retirement age. From [The Wall Street Journal]( The loss of French President Emmanuel Macronâs parliamentary majority is an early sign of how Russiaâs squeeze on European energy prices is raising the economic and political stakes for European leaders as the invasion of Ukraine becomes a war of attrition. Mr. Macronâs party lost dozens of seats in the National Assembly to candidates backed by far-left firebrand Jean-Luc Melenchon and far-right leader Marine Le Pen. Both politicians seized on record-level inflation to portray Mr. Macron as a leader who paid more attention to his role on the diplomatic stage, dealing with the war in Ukraine, than to voters struggling to make ends meet. Macron is hardly the only politician guilty of ignoring his votersâ needs. But heâs the first European leader to pay the price. And that will indeed affect the policies of the other sniveling European PMs. But before I get to the implications of this, itâs worth noting the makeup of the French parliament. Source: [The BBChé]( Ensemble is Macronâs party, seemingly in control with the most seats. The Nupes - rhymes with âdupesâ - is the new far-left coalition that Jean-Luc Mélenchon leads and is the second largest party. Though Mélenchon believes he achieved a "total rout" of an "arrogant" president in less than a month, NUPES isnât one party. According to the [BBC]( [Mélenchon] has called for Nupes to become a single political grouping in the Assembly, but that's been met with a chorus of derision from the Socialists, Greens, and Communists. "There was never any question of one single group," said Socialist MP Pierre Jouvet. This coalition will surely fall apart as the Left inevitably eats itself. But the real story is the National Rallyâs results. Thatâs Le Penâs party. The NR now has 89 seats in the Parliament, a tenfold increase from the last election. So while the French refused to hold their noses and vote for her directly, they were happy to vote for her policies. If I were Macron, Iâd work with the NR. Nupes wonât do business with him without extracting a Kingâs ransom. The Implications I just ran across this on LinkedIn, courtesy of [FEE]( No, Jon. It wasnât. Those stupid policies, combined with the USGâs energy and Russia policies, are leading the West to ruin. Thatâs why I think significant change is at hand. As Germany, Italy, and Spain see what just happened to Macron, theyâll be paring back their Russophobia. In times like these, itâs never more important to understand the great Thomas Sowellâs quote: No one will really understand politics until they understand that politicians are not trying to solve our problems. They are trying to solve their own problems -- of which getting elected and re-elected are No. 1 and No. 2. Whatever is No. 3 is far behind. So I expect Western politicians to change their tack to get re-elected. If not, more dominoes will fall. Wrap Up Of course, itâs too late in the US for the Democrats. The Red Wave in November will severely paralyze Bidenâs last two years in office. Thank God for that! The last thing we need is more Biden initiatives. Letâs also see how the market opens today. Stock futures are up roughly 2%. Bitcoin trades at $21,180 as I look at it. Perhaps this is the week we turn around, but I wonât bet on that yet. Until tomorrow. All the best, Sean Ring
