I was about to write a piece on [all these companies leaving Russia]( and wondering if they think Russia will ever let them back in. I was also thinking about how the [UK has just about thrown out their Russian oligarchs]( and how that will pressure their high-end property market. But then, I opened [ZeroHedge](. ZH is great in times like these because it cuts through the crap. ZH also reprints excellent articles from reputable writers like Glenn Greenwald. I must admit, I’ve been a fan of Greenwald since the whole Snowden affair, as he’s proven time and again to be the most balanced writer out there. What he wrote on substack - and I encourage you to [read his piece]( - must be spread far and wide. But before I get to Glenn’s fine work and my views on it, I’ve already looked at this conflict from the Russian side in [this Rude edition](. I had heard that Ukraine might have biological research facilities, but I certainly couldn’t prove or disprove that from here. So I left it out altogether. And after the US “pre-emptive strike” against Iraq, I think unproven claims of weapons facilities are a poor reason to invade a country. But, the clue should’ve given it away: too many people in the press labeled it a “conspiracy theory.” In 2022, a “conspiracy theory” is defined as “something not yet proven, but will be proven in a few weeks.” So let’s dig in and see what Victoria Nuland and her neocon State Department thugs have done this time. Who’s Victoria Nuland? Wait, you’ve never heard of her… And that’s no reflection at all on your competence. She’s stayed in the shadows most of her career. Before this slip-up, you might have heard of a nasty US diplomat in Ukraine who uttered the phrase “F*ck the EU.” Yup, that was Victoria Nuland. The Russians probably did leak that tape to embarrass her. Anyway, Victoria Nuland has all the credentials you can ask for, and then some. She born to Sherwin Nuland, famous in his own right as a surgeon and bioethics professor at Yale. He was also of Ukrainian origin. She attended Brown and then married Lithuanian-American Robert Kagan, one of the nastiest warmongering neocons out there. With his best buddy Bill Kristol - the unintentional comedian - they founded the Project for the New American Century. From Wikipedia: PNAC's stated goal was "to promote American global leadership." The organization stated that "American leadership is good both for America and for the world," and sought to build support for "a Reaganite policy of military strength and moral clarity." Of the twenty-five people who signed PNAC's founding statement of principles, ten went on to serve in the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush, including Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Paul Wolfowitz. Observers such as Irwin Stelzer and Dave Grondin have suggested that the PNAC played a key role in shaping the foreign policy of the Bush Administration, particularly in building support for the Iraq War. You’ve seen those names before, haven’t you? Of course, academics will dismiss this all as a coincidence, but you’re smarter than that. So the Kagan-Nuland family is one of neocon royalty, as Greenwald puts it. But the most gleaming part of Nuland’s resumé is that she managed to stay employed in government from Clinton to Bush to Obama. She resigned in 2017 under Trump. Now she’s Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs for Joke Biden. It seems Vicky works for all the warmongers! Nuland and Ukraine Nuland has been the de facto Queen of Ukraine, by the President’s Leave, of course, for a while now - with her interregnum being when Trump was in charge. By that, I mean she’s been “guiding” Ukraine under American auspices. Considering most of Europe’s governments are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the CIA, this is par for the course. Besides her famous phone call where she said exactly what she thought about the EU, Nuland outlined the following essential elements of the U.S. foreign policy towards Russia: - Deter further aggression through the projection of strength and unity with allies; - Build resilience and reduce vulnerability among friends and Allies facing Russian pressure and coercion; - Cooperate on core national security priorities when U.S. interests and Russia's do align; - Sustain ties to the Russian people and business community to preserve the potential for a more constructive relationship in the future. I’m not sure whatever happened to Points 3 and 4. If I had to venture a guess - and this is pure conjecture - I think she forgot she was in a televised hearing for a moment. Many times officials give testimony behind closed doors. She probably had a momentary lapse of location. With all that said, the cat’s out of the bag. Now whether or not the biological research labs were for nefarious purposes, Putin’s story about knocking out weapons labs suddenly has some plausibility, if not outright proof. Again, I think pre-emptive strikes on a sovereign nation are beyond the pale. But if you look at the makeshift map I made for you below, it’s pretty easy to see why President Putin wouldn’t feel so shy. After all, those thick red lines are the shared Ukrainian-Russian borders. Wrap Up I don’t think the world will reverse its anti-Russia policies for a second. But this bit of news is critical because, again, it looks like the “conspiracy theorists” are really “psychics.” With Nuland’s track record and pedigree as a neocon aggressor, she’s just the person you’d want in Ukraine if you were, say, protecting your son’s business dealings. But her utterance at a televised briefing is big news. And funnily enough, it looks like it got buried. Thank heavens for guys like Glenn Greenwald. Without them, we’d be lurching in the dark.
