I don’t know about you, but nothing trips my geopolitical light fantastic than when the French are pissed off. There’s something so delightful, so satisfying when as they pout and exclaim, “C’est catastrophe!” On the back of the USG giving Australia their nuclear submarine technology, with the blessing of the United Kingdom, France was throwing tantrums. Let’s have a closer look. Fissure in the Western Alliance Last week, the United States decided to give Australia a truckload of submarine technology to enable the Australians to patrol the Pacific Ocean and take the burden off the U.S. Navy. This is all to contain China. It makes perfect sense from the American standpoint, but there are consequences to their actions. It seems a nuclear fissure has opened up in the Western Alliance. France is furious right now. So upset are the Frogs that they recalled their ambassadors from the United States and Australia. According to the [AP]( Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a written statement that the French decision, on request from President Emmanuel Macron, “is justified by the exceptional seriousness of the announcements” made by Australia and the United States. It’s an extraordinary move. France has never recalled its ambassador from the US. Ever. Let’s remind ourselves: there are always tiffs in the Western Alliance because it's very loose. And let's face it: France is a proto-Communist country, even though it never admits it. The lack of success from that statist system partially explains why they’re on their Fifth Republic. Pourquoi? Why did France do this? Shouldn't France be happy that they don't have to worry about patrolling the Pacific along with their Anglo-Saxon cousins? Well, it's going to cost France a bit of money. You see, before Australia got this fabulous nuclear technology from the United States, France was ready to build them a submarine fleet for the mere cost of $65 billion. When the Australians accepted American largess and took their technology instead, France lost a boatload of money. Australia still has to pay France a $2.5 billion withdrawal fee. So France isn't getting out of this empty-handed; France is getting a plush cash payment for their trouble. But it's still, in their eyes, a $62.5 billion loss for their industries. I can see why they're upset. But if this doesn't highlight to you that it's all about the money, I don't know what will. There is absolutely no reason for France to flip its powdered wig over this, but it has. Perhaps they feel they backed the wrong horse. After all, President Macron warmly shook hands with Biden at a G-7 summit in June and confirmed that “America is back.” It's all about the economics of the situation, not the best solution for The West. Of course, it's very easy to say that from the Anglo-Saxon perspective, because the Americans will make all that money. And, of course, that just pumps up the military-industrial complex more. It emboldens the deep state even more and does pretty much everything we don't want it to do, except to contain China. Increasingly, I think that will be more and more important. So nothing I wrote about last week changes at all. The Western Alliance must do more to thwart China. I stand by my writing that it would be great to bring Russia into our orbit if we could get our heads out of our butts and put away all our biases. But it’s now in Western Europe where we're having many problems. Again, France is this massive military power simply because Germany isn't allowed to have an enormous military, because... well, we know what happens when they get a bit uppity, those Germans. But it'd be interesting to see the German reaction to this. I'm sure the Germans are on the French side because, well, hey, they've got to save face for the European Union. The EU isn’t happy, but then again, when are they? According to [CNN]( Brussels is feeling scarred. A senior EU official told CNN that this was "English-speaking countries" who are "very belligerent" forming an alliance "against China." The official noted that these were the same nations who took the lead in invading Afghanistan and Iraq. "And we all know the results," they added. Ouch. EU put forward the idea of building its own army, which was pooh-poohed by, of course, the United States and many of the NATO powers. Those countries want the United States involved in defending the European Union against Russia. However, because America has become so wobbly on its commitments lately, especially looking at Afghanistan and now this deal with Australia, you can see why the EU will want to build its own army and defend its own land. To them, America is untrustworthy at the moment. Biden is Trump, and Trump is Biden! Interestingly, the French Foreign Minister compared Joe Biden to Donald Trump. I find this utterly remarkable. Like Donald Trump or not, he didn't flip-flop nearly as much as Biden does. And Biden simply has no clue about foreign policy. Foreign Minister Le Drian said: It's a real stab in the back. We created a relationship of trust with Australia, and that trust has been betrayed. I am very angry and bitter today. This is not something allies do to each other. This brutal, unilateral, and unpredictable decision reminds me a lot of what Mr. Trump used to do. Trump was not an expert in foreign policy, but he managed to get some good things done. Biden hasn't done one good thing yet, unless you count this as his first good thing. So yes, France is absolutely steaming over this. I look forward to seeing what kind of repercussions will play out in Europe over the coming years and decades, in terms of their defense spending. I think it's time for Europe to defend itself, but I don't think it needs to protect itself against a Russian invasion. That is just pure fantasy, to prop up the military-industrial complex. Russia cannot, and has no plans to, invade Europe. However, I do think the French and the rest of Europe, especially Greece, Italy, and Spain, need to defend themselves against the invasion that is now perpetual. They just let the boat people rock up on the shore and settle in Europe. That needs to stop. If there is an EU Coast Guard getting built as a result of this, I would be thrilled to hear about it.
