Viewers clearly love settling down for the evening and learning about despicable murderers. As many as [35%]( of us watch true crime content at least once per week. “Audiences have always liked the more salacious details of penny dreadfuls and real life crime detective novels,” says [Christopher Chavez](, an associate professor at the University Of Oregon and academic expert in media studies. “As television became more popular, and as streaming platforms have demanded content, it has become a tried and true genre that could be produced under pretty cheap circumstances.” As the genre has blossomed, shows have become more sophisticated too. The likes of Manhunter, Under the Banner of Heaven, Unbelievable, The Act, and most recently Dahmer have used different vantage points to tell their stories, says Chavez. “People live in fear of these kinds of stories,” says Chavez. “Watching them is one of the ways that they try to understand or make sense or even control them to some degree.” While audiences can’t get enough of watching dastardly deeds, plenty of true crime shows have gone under the radar. [SHOP NOW]( Landscapers Inspired by the U.K. murders of William and Patricia Wycherley, [Landscapers]( tells the story of a married couple who murder the wife’s parents, bury them in their back garden — and then get away with it for over a decade. Oscar winner Olivia Colman and renowned actor David Thewlis give superb performances as the mild-mannered, murderous couple. The directing by Will Sharpe is utterly engaging too. Dr. Death In [Dr. Death](, Joshua Jackson plays Christopher Duntsch, a rising Dallas neurosurgeon whose patients start ending up injured or mutilated, even dead. Featuring Alec {NAME} and Christian Slater as Duntsch’s surgeon colleagues, and AnnaSophia Robb as a district attorney — who are all trying to stop “Dr. Death” — it’s a slow-burner that gets under your skin with each installment. The Peacock crime drama, inspired by a 2018 [podcast](, has already been renewed for a second season, which will focus on disgraced Italian surgeon Paolo Macchiarini. The Serpent [The Serpent]( is easy to get sucked into. Both Tahar Rahim and Jenna Coleman are irresistible as the leading criminals. The Thailand locations and 1970s setting of this Netflix and BBC One series are just as mesmerizing. Then, of course, there’s murder — lots of it. Rahim plays Charles Sobhraj, known as “the Serpent,” a serial killer who drugs, robs and murders tourists. Dirty John [Dirty John]( is a true crime anthology series is based on [Christopher Goffard’s podcast]( of the same name. Eric Bana plays John Meehan, a charismatic man who appears to be just looking for love and seemingly finds it with Debra Newell (Connie Britton). But Meehan is a conman with a long history of abuse and manipulation. The stacked cast also includes Juno Temple, Julia Garner, Jean Smart and John Getz, while the second season focuses on Amanda Peet as murderer Betty Broderick. Both thrilling seasons are available on Netflix. A Friend of the Family [A Friend of The Family]( tells the chilling story of pedophile Robert Berchtold, who, in the mid 1970s, twice kidnapped the young teenaged daughter of his close friends, the Brobergs. But the story gets even more twisted as we learn about the affairs that Berchtold had with both Bob (Colin Hanks) and Mary Ann (Anna Paquin) Broberg. Eliza Hittman’s directing immediately establishes A Friend of The Family as an absorbing drama that is all the more terrifying because of how immersive and realistic it feels. Candy Jessica Biel portrays Candy Montgomery, who in 1980 was accused of murdering neighbor Betty Gore with an ax. While that’s already a strong hook for a series, [Candy]( is made all the better by Melanie Lynskey’s magnificent portrayal of Betty. Wonderfully constructed and with some sparkling costume and set design, the Hulu crime drama is so engrossing that you’ll easily binge on all five episodes over a weekend. Des One of the most feared serial killers in British history, Dennis Nilsen murdered at least twelve young men and boys in London between 1978 and 1983. David Tennant plays Nilsen so chillingly and expertly, it will make your skin crawl. While [Des]( — available to watch on Roku, Amazon and YouTube — is just three terrifying episodes, they’re so dark and disturbing that you might appreciate that there aren’t more. The Staircase [The Staircase]( — which tells the story of crime novelist Michael Peterson, who was accused of murdering his wife Kathleen — is based on the 13-episode docu-series of the same name. The HBO Max show even incorporates the docu-series crew into the show. This addition helps to give an even deeper perspective to The Staircase mystery, especially since Colin Firth and Toni Collette’s performances are so captivating. Both of them have already been nominated for Emmy Awards. Manhunt Over the course of its two seasons, [Manhunt]( depicts how the FBI caught “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, and then how Richard Jewell was mistaken for Olympic bomber Eric Rudolph. Both seasons dovetail the fictionalized perspectives of the police and the criminal with well-constructed narratives. Manhunt is available to watch on Fubo TV and Hulu. Truth Be Told Technically, the Apple TV+ series [Truth Be Told]( isn’t actually based on a true crime. However, the first season is heavily inspired by the hugely popular true crime podcast [Serial](, whose host Sarah Koenig is a consultant on the series. In Truth Be Told, Octavia Spencer plays an investigative reporter and podcaster who, after seeing new evidence, begins seeking justice regarding the murder conviction of a man she helped to send to prison decades ago (Warren Cave, played by Aaron Paul). As usual, Spencer is highly engaging. [Season 3]( is available now.
