IMPORTANT Misery Upon Misery 7.8 and 7.5 Magnitude Quakes Hit 9 Hours Apart, at Least 1,400 Dead The first quake struck at 4:17 a.m. local time, near the Turkish provincial capital of Gaziantep and only 25 miles from the Syrian border â in a region already ravaged by a decadelong war and in the throes of an icy blizzard. At least 900 people were killed in 10 Turkish provinces, 371 in government-held parts of Syria and 211 in opposition-held areas. The second quake hit shortly after lunchtime, near the Turkish town of Ekinozu some 65 miles north of Gaziantep. Itâs too early to tell how much damage they caused but the death toll from both quakes is expected to rise significantly.
