Glaude Jr. The chair of the department of African American studies at Princeton University, Glaude is a top academic voice on race. The author of Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul and In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America, Glaude is a keen observer of African American political life, religious thought, gender and class. 5. Jasmine Davis As a dyslexic trans woman raised in Chicago, Davis was often told she wouldn’t be able to overcome the obstacles placed in her way. But her struggles with schoolwork in a flawed education system proved a blessing in disguise, as she was inspired to help improve the way people like her were taught — particularly after attending Second City Improv in Chicago and meeting other LGBTQ people who were living their dreams. Now based in Los Angeles, Davis is a working actress, appearing in hit shows like L.A.’s Finest and The Chi. [6. John Kasich]( The former Ohio governor presided over a period of record growth in the Buckeye State, adding more than a half-million jobs and expanding health coverage for low-income, vulnerable residents. He ran for president in the 2016 GOP primary, with a campaign focused on resolving partisan divisions and opposing the rancor that now dominates political life. The author of four New York Times best-sellers — as well as proud husband and father of twin daughters — now serves as a senior commentator for CNN while running the Kasich Company. 7. Angela Duckworth A University of Pennsylvania psychologist and 2013 MacArthur Fellow, Duckworth founded Character Labs to advance scientific insights that help children thrive. Her experience as a public school teacher in some of the nation’s largest cities — New York City, San Francisco and Philadelphia — informs that mission, which she writes about in her powerful book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. [8. Jalen Rose]( The former NBA standout and member of Michigan’s iconic “Fab Five” team has evolved into one of the sharpest commentators in the game.
