But there has been one counterintuitive finding: [Suicide rates stayed flat]( in Massachusetts in the early pandemic months. 2. Weather Warning Seasonal affective disorder [strikes around 10 million]( Americans each year, with symptoms such as oversleeping, weight gain and lethargy that hit when seasons change and the weather gets colder. [Experts predict a heavier load]( this year, as many of the socially distanced outdoor activities that helped us through the pandemic become unavailable (or at least far less comfortable). Everything from [journaling to light therapy]( can be helpful to brave the blues. 3. Substance Abuse State health officials are reporting [spikes in opioid deaths]( amid lockdowns, as increased isolation combines with a lack of in-person treatment options. Substance abuse of all kinds is on the rise, with white-collar professionals [increasingly vulnerable as they work from home](. But the pandemic has also forced the federal government to [relax restrictions on prescribing methadone](, a powerful narcotic that’s also considered a top-notch treatment for opioid addiction. It’s possible the crisis could lead to better access to critical medication. 4. Racial Burden A series of high-profile killings of Black people followed by racial unrest have put an extra mental burden on people of color. Add to that the coronavirus disparities: [Data from the U.S. census reveals]( that 43 percent of Black and Latino workers — a stark comparison with 25 percent of white workers — are employed in service or production jobs that have been deemed “essential” during the pandemic, and have [died from the virus at far higher rates](. 5. War Clouds It’s the last thing the world needs amid its myriad crises — but the prospects of a military conflict are getting stronger each week, with multiple hot spots simmering all at once. Over the weekend, [Turkey announced plans to extend its exploration]( of oil and gas in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, despite heightened tensions with Greece and Cyprus, both of which have accused Ankara of encroaching into parts of the sea that they alone have the right to exploit economically under international law. Russia, [Israel]( and the U.S. are all trying to defuse those tensions — in ways that benefit them. But that’s hardly the only war scenario hovering over the winter of 2020. Nuclear powers India and China remain locked in a standoff over their disputed Himalayan border. Chinese and U.S. jets are teasing one another over the Taiwan Strait. [The Taliban]( has given up its pretense of a cease-fire in Afghanistan. And a [peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan]( could shatter any day. [Read More on OZY]( 6. What’s Next? The dread of what’s to come is also weighing on many. A cacophonous and contentious U.S. election [may not be resolved on Nov. 3](, and violence and chaos in the streets could provide another strain.
