Weekend Listening
1. The Shrink Next Door
This podcast should have been as big as Serial. In [six episodes]( (plus some post-series updates and follow-ups), it tells the story of manipulative analyst-to-the-stars Ike Herschkopf and his slow takeover of a patientâs life. Prefer to watch instead? Apple is turning the story into a series starring Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell.
2. When Katty Met Carlos
What on earth is going on in America right now? Itâs a question much of the world is asking â and one we all wish we could answer. Enter the BBCâs Katty Kay and OZY cofounder Carlos Watson, two people exceptionally positioned to give listeners across the world unique and fresh insight into these 50 states. They dissect American identity, racial bias, politics, the economy and public health challenges in a groundbreaking new podcast from OZY and the BBC. Listen now on [Apple Podcasts](, [Spotify](, the [iHeart Radio app](, or wherever you get [your podcasts](.

Twitch Streaming
1. Mieckii
Maybe youâre not comfortable going out in society any more than you have to right now. But if you miss the sounds of New York City streets, this is for you. This [NYC bike messenger]( uses his Twitch stream to take nearly 40,000 followers around the city via a GoPro strapped to his chest.
2. Maya Higa
This 22-year-old college student is a big old bird nerd. You can catch her on her stream painting, riding horses, and yes, even gaming. But our favorites are [the videos]( where she takes us along on wildlife adventures, like releasing an opossum or practicing falconry.
3. Joy Stique
While this [drag queen]( does also play games on the internet, weâre actually all about their real-time make-up transformations, streamed live on the platform (and then they play games in costume). Theyâre part of a coalition of Twitch drag queens known as the [Stream Queens](, if you canât get enough.
Great Books
1. This I Believe
This year has challenged everyone, making us consider what we can endure, what the future might hold and whatâs really important. But as you consider your own principles, take a dive into other peopleâs thoughts on the matter, with This I Believe. Based on the radio series running off-and-on since the 1950s, [the book]( collects testimonials about personal beliefs from celebrities, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, Albert Einstein and Helen Keller, plus unknowns. You can buy the essays piecemeal via Audible and listen to just the ones you want (most in their own voices).
2. The Overstory
This [Pulitzer Prize-winning novel]( would be good anytime. But in a year thatâs seen most people cut off from the outside world for months and millions of acres of forest destroyed, this beautiful novel about humankindâs connection to trees has a special resonance. Warning: Youâre likely to get really into trees, even the spindly city trees you walk by every day.
3. The Supernova Era
Chinese author Cixin Liu is a legend for his Three-Body Problem series, but [this 2003 book]( â only translated into English last year after Liu got really famous internationally â is well worth a look. It posits a world where humankind has just a couple of years to prepare children to rule the world after a supernova sets a process in motion that kills off all the adults. Imagine Lord of the Flies on a nuclear scale, but with Liuâs signature talent for big sci-fi set pieces.

Fall Smoothies
1. Butternut Squash Smoothie
Just because pumpkins get the emoji, it doesnât mean you should forget the humble butternut. Trade in that pumpkin spice latte (no judgment) for this [cool breakfast treat](, which mixes squash puree with almond butter and tops it all off with cinnamon and ginger. Itâs a good September compromise if itâs still too hot for actual hot drinks but youâre hoping for some autumnal vibes.
2. Salted Caramel Apple Cinnamon Smoothie
OK itâs more milkshake than smoothie, but thereâs nothing wrong with that. The [apple-caramel flavor]( is to die for, and there are a couple of Honeycrisp apples in there to honor the food pyramid. If you want to amp it up a little, try making your own [salted caramel sauce]( to top it.
3. Blueberry Pomegranate Smoothie
Late September is the magical crossover between blueberry season and pomegranate season, making for a great [smoothie blend]( that feels almost tropical â and thus like a tiny vacation, even if youâre still in your kitchen. Fun fact: The best way to de-seed a pomegranate involves [whacking the heck out of it]( with a wooden spoon.
