2 [US, China See Spikes in Virus Cases](
At least nine U.S. states saw record numbers of new COVID-19 cases in the last three days, a jump largely blamed on Memorial Day socializing. China, too, had a fresh outbreak in Beijing, and stock markets shuddered as investors considered the potential for a second coronavirus wave sweeping across the world. Meanwhile, France announced an early end to restrictions on restaurants and international travel after a notable slowdown in cases. Spain plans to open its borders next week, and several other European countries have already done so.

3 [Journalist Sentenced to Jail in Philippines](
Concerns rose over press freedom in the Philippines today when award-winning journalist Maria Ressa was convicted of “cyber libel” and sentenced to up to six years in jail. The charges were related to a 2012 article linking a notable businessman to drug smuggling â but Ressa has more recently become a target for hard-hitting reporting on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who’s called her paper “fake news.” Ressa is expected to appeal the verdict, which also comes with a hefty fine.

4 [Trump Adviser: Extra Benefits End Next Month](
“Weâre paying people not to work.” So said White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow Sunday, explaining that there’d be no extension of the extra $600 unemployment benefit created to help support those put out of work by COVID-19. Legislators are currently debating how and how much to continue helping the record number of [out-of-work Americans](, and while Democrats want to extend the extra benefit, Kudlow joined congressional Republicans in arguing that it’s just an incentive to stay unemployed. Instead, Kudlow floated â but did not detail â the idea of a monetary bonus for returning to work.

Protesters gathered Saturday to mourn 24-year-old Robert Fuller, whose body was found hanging from a tree near City Hall in Palmdale, California, on Wednesday. The sheriff’s department says it was suicide, but others fear it could have been a lynching and are demanding a full investigation. Sunday marked the third anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, when flammable cladding on a high-rise apartment building burst into flames and killed 72 people trapped inside. Prime Minister Boris Johnson led a virtual memorial and London church bells tolled 72 times to honor the victims. But some pointed out that tens of thousands of people across the U.K. still live in buildings wrapped in the same cladding. An investigation into the disaster was paused due to the pandemic, but hearings are set to resume July 6.

[5 OSU Players Asked to Sign Virus Waivers](
The Buckeye stops here. Ohio State’s [football team]( (and their parents) have been asked to sign waivers acknowledging that by returning to campus for training, they risk getting COVID-19. They must also agree to follow social distancing rules, undergo regular testing and self-quarantine if necessary. OSU says the “Buckeye Pledge” is more a “commitment” than a legal document, though some point out that it could mean athletes â who aren’t paid despite colleges making huge amounts of money from football programs â are liable for covering their own costs should they get sick.
