1 [Seattle's Police-Free Zone Irks Trump](
After police abandoned the local precinct there Monday, activists protesting systemic racism and brutality against Black people have claimed a six-block section of Seattle as a police-free “[autonomous zone](,” holding concerts and movie screenings and providing free food and medical care. President Donald Trump lashed out at the organizers on Twitter, calling them “domestic terrorists” and threatening to “take back” the area himself. But he was met with resistance from local authorities: Washington Gov. Jay Inslee suggested that Trump mind his own business, while Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan told him, “Go back to your bunker.”

2 [Attitudes About Policing Shift Across America](
As Democrats in Congress seek dramatic law enforcement reforms, a new poll shows an overwhelming majority of voters across the political spectrum support measures from banning chokeholds to allowing victims of police misconduct to sue. While just 39 percent would dismantle police departments, 76 percent support moving money away from policing and into social services. Both President Trump and Joe Biden said they don’t agree with completely defunding police, and Newark’s progressive Black mayor, Ras Baraka, called it a “bourgeois liberal” solution. A GOP [police reform bill]( will be introduced next week, joining Democrat-backed reforms already on the table.

3 [Border Force Spent Migrant Aid on Dirt Bikes](
A year ago, Congress approved $4.6 billion in emergency funding to help with a huge influx of migrants [at the U.S.-Mexico border]( that threatened to overwhelm the capacity of American agencies. Now the government’s main oversight agency has found that Customs and Border Patrol spent an unknown amount of the $112 million meant to provide food and medical care to asylum-seekers on dirt bikes, boats and computer systems. CBP officials say the violations were “technical” and promised to correct its accounts. Last year, about 1 million migrants were detained, though in the last two months migration has fallen to record lows.

4 [Stocks Fall Anticipating Second Virus Wave](
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,800 points yesterday, its worst day in months, as investors’ enthusiasm was dampened by spikes in COVID-19 cases as lockdowns relax. Manufacturing and banks were among the hardest hit, while shares in videoconferencing company Zoom actually ticked up. Those predicting a quick recovery have largely abandoned that hope, and analysts believe the labor market will take several years to bounce back. Meanwhile, Britain’s economy contracted 20 percent in April, a faster decline than predicted and one that experts warn is unlikely to abate anytime soon.

[1 Louisville Passes No-Knock Warrant Ban](
Louisville, Kentucky’s city council has unanimously passed a ban on no-knock warrants named Breonna’s Law, after Breonna Taylor, who was killed by police in March when they burst into her house on such a warrant while she was sleeping. None of the involved officers has been charged, though one is being investigated for unrelated sexual assault allegations. The recently released incident report [has raised questions](, like why it’s nearly blank and lists Taylor’s injuries as “none.” Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has also introduced a bill to ban no-knock warrants across the country.

[2 Bolsonaro Followers Destroy Virus Memorial](
More than 41,000 Brazilians have died of the coronavirus, and mourners and activists, hoping to raise awareness of the loss, dug 100 holes in the sand of Rio’s Copacabana Beach to remember them, marking each with a large black cross. But supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro â who’s called COVID-19 “a flu” and downplayed its effects even as Brazil has the second-worst outbreak worldwide â allegedly attempted to destroy the memorial today, knocking over crosses and insulting those erecting them. Brazil also announced it will test an [experimental vaccine]( on thousands of Brazilians beginning next month.

[3 Co-Working Space CEO Quits Amid Race Issues](
Wing out the old, wing in the new. [Women’s co-working space]( The Wing has been rocked by allegations that employees of color were systematically mistreated, leading to a virtual staff walkout and the resignation of CEO Audrey Gelman. It’s not the only feminist space to see such allegations: Women’s media sites like Refinery29 and Man Repeller have had similar issues in recent days, with former staffers sharing their own stories after the companies paid lip service to being anti-racist. Wing employees, meanwhile, have made a list of demands to the company’s board.

[4 The Next Big Indie Filmmakers Are on TikTok](
There’s nothing sloppy about these 15 seconds. TikTok videos can be silly, strange or magical â but the app is also a place for young would-be filmmakers to practice with their tools and find a platform for their work, [OZY reports](. The algorithm promotes unknown creators rather than quashing those without huge followings, and while the videos are short, that encourages some to flex their creative muscles and squeeze a whole story into a quarter of a minute. What’s not clear, however, is if the skills they’re learning online will translate to the world of TV and feature films.

[5 Flag Ban Boosts NASCAR Ratings](
NASCAR’s decision to ban the Confederate flag didn’t seem to hurt viewership. Ratings for Wednesday night’s race were up 104 percent from a comparable race last year, and up 16 percent from one two weeks ago. But truck series driver Ray Ciccarelli wasn’t a fan, posting on Facebook that he was quitting over “political BS” â though he hasn’t raced at all in 2020 and has as many career wins as the Confederacy (so zero). While ditching the racist symbol may lose some older NASCAR viewers, the numbers suggest it’s also winning over new fans.
