[How A.I. Could Fix Workplace Harassment](
While AI has its blind spots, it can also see patterns and problems that we canât.
Human societies carry centuries of discriminatory beliefs and practices. Robots, we thought, would not be so encumbered. Itâs now known that artificial intelligence has biases, though. Crime prognostication tools like COMPAS and PredPol have been accused by experts of being racist, causing criminal justice officials to unfairly target people of color and majority-minority neighborhoods. Facial recognition software by IBM and Microsoft accurately guessed White menâs gender, but it failed miserably when it came to dark-skinned women. And last year Amazon had to scrap an internal AI recruiting tool that was found to be anti-women.

[Beyond the Nobel: Esther Duflo Goes Granular on the Problems of Poverty](
Esther Duflo, the youngest to win a Nobel in economics and only the second woman, is rethinking solutions to poverty problems.
Film director Satyajit Ray and actor Marlon Brando walked through the streets of Kolkata in 1967. Ray pushed through the assemblage of beggars and street kids. The 46-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist, along with husband Abhijit Banerjee and Michael Kremer, decided if the devil was in the details, then maybe that was a good place to start looking. On Monday, it netted them the Nobel Prize in economics. Where politicians have traditionally gone macro â everything from government cheese to widely maligned welfare programs â Duflo and crew went micro. And globally so.

In fact, in 2019 so far, two major races and several less well-known ultras have been won outright by women.
