Check out OZY’s original series on being smart with your money. Money. A few have more than they need, some have enough and most of us, well, we would love to have more. And while some savvy investors seem to know all the right moves when it comes to multiplying their wealth, the rest of us could use help. We’ve rounded up some ways that you can be smarter with your money — whether that means investing in smaller amounts, teaching your teen how to be more responsible with their cash (and, let’s face it, yours too), looking at an alternative vehicle for group savings (the South African stokvel) or saving cash on experiences like going to a ballgame or concert. Chinese pop singer Hua Chenyu once made $17,000 in five hours, and he wasn’t even famous yet. In 2014, Hua posted a single on Chinese microblogging site Weibo and charged 2 yuan (30 cents) per download. He also allowed tips. Writers can be tipped for their stories through WeChat and podcasters for their episodes on Ximalaya, China’s biggest spoken-word audio platform. Now, digital tipping is beginning to catch on in the U.S., with Americans who are used to tipping bartenders, baristas and hairstylists loosening their purse strings for other services and creative professionals. The marshmallow experiment is a famous lesson in delayed gratification. A Stanford University psychologist gave children a choice: one reward now, or two rewards if they waited about 15 minutes. Some children took the marshmallow. Others waited, but it wasn’t easy. Many would occupy themselves, cover their eyes or even “stroke the marshmallow as if it were a tiny stuffed animal,” the psychologist observed. Saving for retirement can be like the marshmallow experiment. Only harder. Because while the children know what reward is awaiting them, most adults don’t know how much their savings now will leave them with in the future. When the reward is amorphous, it’s even more difficult to sacrifice now to gain later.
