Stories from the pit [logo, header, fpip] June 8, 2024 Hi Shoppers, I was asked to write a “war story” from the trading floor. Well, breaking into a trading pit as a new trader you were going to war, literally. My mentor and backer, a lovely man, thought it was funny when he ran into one of the guys from the pit I chose to trade in in the elevator and said to him, “I am sending someone out there to destroy you guys.’ I could not believe it!! So on my first day, May 1, 1992, I arrived early and was filling out my trading cards, my hands shaking. This was way before hand held computers. These guys knew I was coming and boy were they ready to chase me out of there. One of them came up to me and literally nose to nose said, “You will never trade in here you f%&king c#@*t!!” All I could muster up was, “Yes I am.” in a very shaky voice. And that was just the beginning. Within my first week, I was first on a trade and took the whole 200 lot down myself. My hands were still shaking. They were so pissed, it was awesome! They taunted me for over a year. Tricking me that I was accepted, “Just don’t be so aggressive.” Then they would continue to redistribute trades, which was completely and totally illegal. I would get phone calls in the pit, they were landlines as cell phones weren’t allowed. Strangers would call me and say “hang in there!” “F’ those guys!” “They are cheating, report them to the Cboe!”. I honestly think I could have had some kind of case of harassment but all I wanted to do was trade. I am not going to lie, it was hell but it was sure worth it.
