Daily Pit Stop [fstp, logo, header] March 21, 2024 [ag views, logo, header] The Russell 2000 finally wakes up! The DOJ is going after Apple Inc (Ticker: AAPL) This is slightly reminiscent of DOJ going after Microsoft Corp (Ticker: MSFT) in 2000. Some Fintwits were getting nervous about that thinking about the DotCom crash. There are still plenty of dumb phones to be had out there if one wants them. I think if we gave the government a break for 10 years and just went on our way we would all be better off. I digress. With AAPL down $6 that leaves the Russell 2000 open to run. The big stocks have had big moves but other stocks will start to catch up. I like the Russell 2000 ETF (Ticker: IWM) to outperform SPX for a few weeks. Hey traders! Each week, my team will give an overview of a stock. I’ll discuss fundamentals, Licia will analyze the charts, and AG will break down the volatility. Hey Influence Traders, Chip makers … ok, [Nvidia (Ticker: NVDA)]( … have had a good run this year. Driven primarily by the excitement around A.I. The U.S. is also throwing its weight behind shoring up U.S. production. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo went so far as to say that the CHIPS and Science Act will put the U.S. on track to manufacture roughly 20% of leading-edge logic chips by the end of the decade. That’s up from … 0% today. The CHIPS Act includes $39 billion in manufacturing incentives. There are a few new plants targeted to benefit from that investment. The thirst for cutting edge semiconductor chips will only increase. They are used in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and machine learning. And, according to Raimondo, it “takes tens of thousands of leading-edge semiconductor chips to train a single large language model." [Taiwan Semiconductor (Ticker: TSM)]( is currently the world's largest advanced contract chip maker. But there is political risk brewing in that part of the world and the U.S. needs its own supplies. That is why CHIPS Act money is starting to flow. It is also why the Biden recently awarded $162 million in CHIPS money to [Microchip Technology (Ticker: MCHP)]( to expand domestic production. Andrew Giovinazzi and I recently took a hard look at MCHP. We can obviously play the CHIP game, but what else can we learn from the flow of CHIPS Act money?
