Is There Anything Worse Than This?

[image] This weekend a friend asked us to take care of his elderly mom for a few hours on the weekend. He and his wife had something important they both needed to attend to. We said sure, but we did not know what we were in for. The woman is in her 60's and has early onset dementia and Alzheimer's. She knows us and our kids and that is the only reason they chose us. Normally she is only with them and her daughter. As I sat with her in the living room for a while, I could tense how anxious and scared she was. She kept asking when they were coming to pick her up, did they know where she was, who was coming to pick her up, why they weren't there yet, and a few other related questions. It was kind of a cycle...the same questions in almost the same order...on repeat. Every 3-4 minutes the cycle would start over after the last one ended. One time she forgot who we were and freaked out. Thankfully she remembered after a few seconds. She is only going to get worse. There is no cure. And the burden on the family is incredible. Can you imagine having your mom forget who you are? Heartbreaking. I don't mean to depress you. But I did want to remind you that nothing is guaranteed. Not tomorrow, not ten years, not your mental health...nothing. Do what you need to do as soon as you can. And if that is trading, get started NOW. If you put it off for retirement, it might never happen...especially if life has other plans for you. Dementia is something none of us plan for...but it happens, and it is expenses when it happens. Prepare your finances now. I pray it doesn't happen to you...and if it doesn't....you won't be sorry that you got your financial house in order.
