[Click here and follow me on LinkedIn.]( #1 [How to backup Google Universal Analytics data]( Google announced the date for deleting your Universal Analytics (GA3) data. It is July 1st, 2024. But I will let more than ten years of my data expire and save only the data that I really need. Here is why. The problem with historical data is that it is historical. It is dated. The insight you get from analyzing historical data is outdated and does not always match the present marketing conditions. The older the data, the more useless it becomes. Comparing one year of web analytics data to the last year can be like comparing apples to oranges because so much would have changed during that time, from website size, traffic, products, and competitors, target market to search and social media landscape. To save your historical GA3 data from being deleted, you will need to import it into BigQuery. Backfilling GA3 data in BigQuery can export historical data into your BigQuery project. However, backfilling the GA3 data into BigQuery is easy; using it could be a nightmare. When you backfill historical data from GA3 into a BigQuery project, the data will be stored in a raw, unprocessed format. The data tables in BigQuery will contain the same data as was collected by GA3, but the data will be stored as individual rows in a tabular format rather than being aggregated into reports as in GA3. Once the data is imported, a lot of formatting work may be required to make it usable or viewable in the same way as it was in the GA3 user interface. The amount of formatting work will depend on your specific tracking needs and the complexity of your data. Then joining and correlating the GA3 and GA4 data is another beast because both GA3 and GA4 use different measurement models and data structures. We are looking at several months of additional work here. Do you really want to go through all this trouble? Just importing GA3 data into BigQuery is pointless if you have no plan to use it. Instead of taking a backup of everything in Universal Analytics, I recommend that you save only the data you really need. #2 Do you want better skills in digital analytics and marketing?
