We have a new name and look [Optica](JUDD7Y2UN:m:1:3287471236:0F66CAB432E0627E5204FE3404CE4D39:r) Dear Colleague, It is an honor to announce the debut of our organization’s new name—Optica, the Society advancing optics and photonics worldwide. OSA has served those who advance optics and photonics across technologies and applications since its earliest days. In concert with the rapid development of the field, the scope and reach of our organization continues to expand at an ever-quickening pace. This growth has inspired leadership to carefully consider whether our name reflected the Society’s work, constituents, and future. In 2017, the Board of Directors launched a multi-faceted examination of our name and its alignment with the organization as a whole. This work included wide-reaching consultation with the diverse customers we serve. Communications, branding, and design experts advised us along the way as we methodically searched for an identity that signifies the vibrant, global organization we are today. We also understood that a new name must be expansive enough to remain relevant to the future generations who will change our field and the world for the better. At the conclusion of much study, Optica emerged as the best representation of the Society. Be assured that our mission, core values, and dedication to excellence all remain in place. We will continue to serve as the leading global forum for light science and technology. And our commitment to remain the professional home for optics and photonics innovators and all those with an interest in the field is unwavering. A [video](JUDD7Y2UN:m:1:3287471236:0F66CAB432E0627E5204FE3404CE4D39:r) describing the evolution of our name is now available, along with other [information](JUDD7Y2UN:m:1:3287471236:0F66CAB432E0627E5204FE3404CE4D39:r) about our exciting future. This week, we’ll be sending out announcements specific to the Optica Publishing Group, the Optica Foundation, membership, meetings, and more. We’ll also be sharing updates about the launch of new programs and benefits. This is an exciting time for the field and our organization. It is especially gratifying to know that we are all part of the community that looked ahead and re-envisioned the Society’s future to ensure it will thrive for the next hundred years.
