Dear friends, I’ve received a few emails over the past couple of weeks expressing concern about the way I promoted my Calm Mind Essential Oil Blend during my Wellness Sale. So I wanted to take the time to acknowledge my mistake and apologize for any harm that I may have caused. I said in my email that Calm Mind is not meant as a substitute for professional help or medication but I did not emphasize that idea enough. Some of my wording negated that statement completely. I even implied that I was able to overcome my severe postpartum anxiety and alcoholism with the use of essential oils. That is absolutely not the case. At my rock bottom I spent Thanksgiving getting blackout drunk in my car in a hotel parking lot. Shortly after that I entered a residential treatment center where I would spend 78 days doing the incredibly hard work of getting sober. I graduated from treatment on February 20th, 2008 and have spent the last 15 years doing the incredibly hard work of staying sober. I’ve often said that I should either be dead or in jail, and that’s not just for shock value. I could have easily ended up in either situation, given the incredibly poor choices I made. But because of dedicated therapists, the right medications, my supportive family, and my Higher Power that never left me, I was given a second chance at life. You’ll notice that essential oils are nowhere on that list. I believe that essential oils have their place as just one tool in a big toolbox of healthy coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety. They make a great addition to a routine that already includes therapy, medication, exercise, a balanced diet, meditation etc. Essential oils are also a great tool for those that are dealing with routine daily stressors and not a diagnosed mental health condition. Essential oils on their own will NEVER be a substitute for professional therapy and medication. And in cases of severe, life threatening anxiety or depression, they wouldn’t even enter my mind as a treatment option. In addition to my own mental health struggles, I have loved ones that have lost their lives to depression, and others that have come dangerously close. It’s not my place to tell their stories but I want you to know that I absolutely understand the severity of those situations. I know how irresponsible it would be to suggest that essential oils could have saved those precious lives. If you or a loved one is facing a mental health crisis you can call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 from any United States based phone.
