Over the last several years, I have been working on my and my husband’s family history. As I have done this, I have learned about the military service of many of our relatives. Last year, I wrote about my father, Richard Warner’s, service in the Korean War and how grateful I am that he was one of the lucky ones who made it home safe and sound. My father’s older brother, Duane Warner, also served in WWII and came home safely. In my husband Dave’s family, his father, Adolph Nystul, also served in the Korean War, while four of his older brothers (Dave’s uncles), Joseph, Arthur, Vernon, and Alton, served in WWII. All served honorably and came home except for the second oldest son, Joseph, who died fighting for his country in Sicilia, Italy, in 1944. Memorial Day has always been special to me and my family. I remember as a kid, our whole family would get up for a sunrise flag-raising service at our church, where we would hear patriotic speeches and songs. Those had a lasting impression on my life. Then, after learning about those near and dear to us who served their country, Memorial Day took on even more significance. In 1992, President George Bush said, “Whether we observe the occasion through public ceremony or through private prayer, Memorial Day leaves few hearts unmoved. Each of the patriots whom we remember on this day was first a beloved son or daughter, a brother or sister, or a spouse, friend, and neighbor.” I’m sure every one of you have similar stories in your families and I want to let you and your loved-ones know how thankful I am for your service and sacrifice to help keep our country free.
