For the fourth year in a row, hurricane activity started earlier than it used to, beginning with Subtropical Storm Alberto on May 25. Since then, we've had to contend with several severe storms, the most severe of which was Hurricane Florence, which slammed into the Carolinas with all the fierceness of a Category 4 storm and 140 mph winds. Hurricane Helene hit Europe with 110 mph winds at its Category 2 peak. This year's batch comes after some of the worst hurricanes in recent history that hit last year... Hurricane Irma smashed Florida a little over a year ago, leading to severe damage in the form of flooding, destroyed property, and power outages. But that was nothing to the effects Puerto Rico saw after Hurricane Maria in September of last year, which was the worst natural disaster on record to affect the Dominica region. It took nearly a year to get Puerto Rico back on the grid following this disaster. Even now, the island is still recovering from the second-longest blackout in world history. And now, Hurricane Michael is barreling toward Florida after strengthening into a Category 4 storm - as of this writing, it's nearing Category 5 - and 150 mph winds and estimated storm surges of up to 13 feet. This is expected to be the strongest storm to reach the Florida panhandle in 13 years. So, as Floridians hunker down with bottled water and canned goods, you can be sure we're going to be hearing about even more power outages when Michael finally blows itself out... Power companies in the area have warned that power outages could potentially last for several days as the storm hits. Possibly even more dangerous in a situation such as this are downed power lines submerged in flooded areas, making the risk for electrocution a big concern. This can't continue. Right now, our electric grid is a brittle, interlinked system pieced together bit by bit over the past 125 years. The recent natural disasters this year have left millions of people without power. Although strong winds are naturally going to down power lines, the extent to which this is happening is unacceptable. In some areas, even a small storm could knock hundreds of people from the power grid. This makes it clear that the current power grid is not only fragile and prone to failure - it's also capable of completely disrupting our daily lives on a grand scale. Think of the last time you were left without power. You have to ration how often you open the fridge... No electronics can be charged, leaving many vulnerable with no communication...
