The latest from NZ House & Garden magazine. People across the North Island have lost so much following both the Auckland floods and then Cyclone Gabrielle. The extent of the devastation couldn’t have been predicted. Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones, their homes, businesses and animals. The word unprecedented has been well-used and deservedly so and it seems impossible to imagine how anything can be the same for those affected. When we sent the March issue (on sale today) to print, the Auckland floods had just happened but – like everyone else – we were unaware of what was to come. The cover features the beautiful semi-rural Gisborne home of Bron and Sandy Kemp and their family. Owners of online business Twisted Citrus, which celebrates Gisborne oranges in particular, the couple renovated the 1900s kauri villa to better suit their family’s needs. With Gisborne one of the hardest hit areas, I am pleased to say that, at last call Bron said the family was all okay and the house was spared following the cyclone. Similarly, the Napier hill home of interior designer Dael Brady and her two daughters – also featured in this issue – remains intact and escaped the desolation that much of the Hawke's Bay has endured. It is uplifting to hear these positive stories amid so much news that is not. If you’re keen to try something new in the kitchen then our food editor Julie Le Clerc’s light and lovely modern Asian dishes are a great place to start. Each packs a flavour punch, and as with all of Julie’s recipes, they are adaptable to ingredient swaps and not hard to make. Worth giving a go as food is always a great thing to share with friends, family and former strangers. See its transformation in our new issue, on sale now.  [spacer] stuff.co.nz/life-style/nz-house-garden [spacer] When two become one [padding] Building work on a new development in Christchurch had barely started when a couple decided to combine two apartments into one. It proved complicated but was very rewarding; they are delighted with the way the new space works with their decor.  [padding] [padding] [spacer][separator] [padding] [spacer] [padding] stuff.co.nz/life-style/nz-house-garden [spacer] A place of calm in Tairāwhiti [padding] Our Home of the Month is a renovated Gisborne villa that brings two facets of a couple's lives together – work and play. The pair, and their children, have found calm at the semi-rural 1900s-era home that sits at the apex of their citrus orchard and landscaped gardens, offering views of vineyards and the hills beyond. You'll find it in our March issue, on sale now.  [padding] [spacer] [padding] [spacer][separator] [padding] [spacer] [padding] [favourite find]( [spacer] Sponsored content [padding] Save on soft furnishings [padding] Harvey Furnishings is offering 30% off selected cushions, bedding and throws. As a result, you may be missing the daylight you need to boost vitamin D, sleep better at night and ward off seasonal “blues”. Now is the time to bring natural light indoors with a Solatube skylight. Fast-forward to today and Windsong is proudly pest-free and a credit to the owners' hard work and dedication. Here you'll find the results of a careful nurturing of a fragment of ngahere – original bush – as well as native birds and plenty of other moments that surprise and delight. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
