[NZ House & Garden]( Hi {NAME}, I admire those people who carefully curate their homes; taking time to find just the right item for a specific corner, a particular fabric, cushion or light, with the outcome being a clear cohesion of decor and spaces. Their homes are layered without being try-hard and are often perfectly matched with who they are. Our May issue, on sale now, has a line-up of homes with interiors that demonstrate thoughtful, unhurried decisions and collections. Bridget and Owen Catchpole’s mid-century Auckland home has been a love affair from the outset, coupled with careful planning and patience. “For a long time we didn’t have much furniture but gradually started, room by room, thinking about the colours and furniture we needed,” says Bridget. No bull at a gate purchases here. The result is a home that is true to the period both inside and out. Likewise, when Jacqueline Taylor and her former husband became the proud owners of the 170-year-old Hawke’s Bay landmark, Te Mata House, she took seriously her role as protector of the property. Dedicating three years to the renovations, she has not just preserved its grandeur but has also lifted it to new heights. “From the moment we stepped over the threshold, I was so connected to the history and grandness of it all. It became important to me that we restored it perfectly,” she says. Great consideration was given to the garden, which included snaring the services of renowned Australian landscape designer Paul Bangay. It’s an extraordinary property and our May issue’s Home of the Month. With Mother’s Day in mind our food editor Julie Le Clerc created brunch dishes with global flavours that will work beyond May 8. These are recipes you can whip up to spoil Mum daily. I’m a fan of the Okonomiyaki (a savoury Japanese pancake) and the Fruit & Almond Baked Oats. Happy reading – and happy cooking. Naomi Larkin Editor In our May issue The Belle of Hawke's BayThe current guardian of 170-year-old Te Mata House in Havelock North, Hawke's Bay, has taken its beauty to new heights with a full renovation and additions such as a whisky room and an equestrian arena. See how gorgeous the homestead now is in our May issue. Mid-century magic Taking on the extensive renovation of a mid-century Auckland home was slightly daunting for this couple but they approached it with passion and much enthusiasm – and took their time to get it right. They're delighted with the results and we're sure you'll love reading about the project too.
