[NZ House & Garden]( Hi {NAME}, A Roger Walker-designed townhouse is a dream come true for a couple who moved from Hamilton to New Plymouth. As John Walsh says of the Kiwi architect in an article for Te KÄhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects: âFew figures in the history of New Zealand architecture are as synonymous with a place and time as is Roger Walker with Wellington in the 1960s and '70s.â And for Rhys Cumpstone and Tim Allingham their 1979 house with its classic Walker features including a turret, porthole, double-pitched roof, brick chimney, dormer windows and arched doors was a magical find. The large wrap-around verandah â perfect for entertaining â and a hidden garden left no doubt that this was the one for them. But they could also see the possibilities a renovation would offer and the massive potential of the garden â the latter was recently opened for the Taranaki Garden Festival. Their ability to see just where they could take the project and shape it to meet their own needs is a skill, but one which all the homeowners â and gardeners â in our March issue share. This monthâs magazine, on sale today, includes two beautiful gardens â one in Northland and the other in South Canterbury â that were created by committed gardeners who kept at it despite personal and practical obstacles. These included a house fire and the death of a friend who was also behind much of one of the gardenâs design, along with more practical barriers like a lack of money and time. I urge you to read these features because, like so many of our garden stories, they outline just how much blood, sweat and tears go into the evolution of these horticultural triumphs. And, if like me, youâre on the hunt for a particular piece of furniture to complete your lounge then check out our Special Feature: Living Rooms. Hopefully among the slender chairs, chunky sofas, lamps and coffee tables youâll find the missing piece of the puzzle. Naomi Larkin
Editor In our March issue Kings of their castleA New Plymouth home by iconic New Zealand architect Roger Walker dating from the late 1970s was the find of a lifetime for this couple. After an extensive renovation that maintained the integrity of the house, they filled it with their combined art collection and collectibles. See it in our latest issue, on sale now. Heritage home a rewarding projectCaring for an important part of Taranaki's history has been pure pleasure for a couple who love character homes and the responsibility of being guardians. They spent five years restoring Syme House, the 116-year-old property on the outskirts of Eltham, which has an equally impressive garden to match. Monochrome magic in CanterburyHigh tech meets visual simplicity at this pristine property in Christchurch. Its owners were inspired by the Mediterranean, particularly the Greek island of Mykonos with its crisp, white buildings and their clean lines.
