[NZ House & Garden]( Hi {NAME}, I am both inspired and delighted to be working with such a fabulous group of women who dedicate their all to get NZ House & Garden magazine out every month. The team is Auckland-based so compiling this November issue – on sale today – was done while in lockdown. I'm proud of the result. Not just proud because of the tricky circumstances under which it was put together but also because it's such a great issue. It's bumper in size, the homes and gardens are from right across the motu and are all full of personality and style; the Outdoor Living feature provides lots of ideas to help you find your own look and the food will get you back in the kitchen cooking with gusto (more about that in our food editor Julie Le Clerc’s next newsletter). Our cover house – a mid-century Christchurch home – is architecturally distinctive with an original brick cone that slices through an exterior wall, it’s built on a sloping section and is surrounded by plants and trees including a large cherry blossom. With its renovation, owner and interior designer Angelique Armstrong used her skills, including an eye for detail and appreciation for art and history, to “pay homage to the best aspects of the original 1970s design”. It's a beautiful example of how a carefully considered renovation can both restore a home to its former glory and inject the homeowners' personality into every space, making it wonderful to live in. The gardens in this issue – one in Taranaki and the other in Christchurch – demonstrate just how different a garden can be. The former is a patchwork of colour and layers with underplanting filling spaces below mature trees, hedges providing precision and definition and perennials flourishing throughout. The latter is filled with water features including a rill that runs through the length of the house on one side, a swimming pool on the other and a stream at the bottom. Enjoy. Naomi Larkin Editor In our November issue The home with the secret cellarIf not for a persistent real estate agent, the opportunity to build this magnificent Canterbury home – which even has a hidden wine cellar – would have passed this family by. It's the Home of the Month in our new issue. Mid-century home offers balanceWith a striking original brick cone at its heart, this 1970s Christchurch property has different personalities depending on where you stand. The home's interior designer owner wanted its spaces to feel different, "like yin and yang". Kiwi expat's technicolour Amsterdam apartment is a sorbet surpriseA New Zealander and his Dutch partner have meticulously renovated a commercial loft in the Netherlands to create a fun, pastel-coloured contemporary space with touches of retro cool that merges their two cultures. See their technicolour dream apartment in our November issue, on sale now.
