The pilot on Ted Lakingâs domestic flight into the city last week had some unwelcome news: The tarmac was too crowded for the aircraft to descend. It would be another hour of circling around before the runway was clear enough for landing. The trip home on Monday wasnât much better. Mr. Laking, a city councilor in Whitehorse, Yukon, was again greeted by signs of trouble before entering the airport. This time, it was the tail end of a line of travelers spilling through Pearsonâs sliding doors. âIt feels almost like a postapocalyptic movie, just everybody for themselves,â Mr. Laking said. Security lines with unclear endpoints would snake into a new course at the request of airport workers. There was no room to sit and too little staff to handle the irate travelers. All this was happening against the dissonant soundtrack of flight-delay announcements. Travelers crowded the security queue in the departures lounge at Toronto Pearson International Airport in May.Cole Burston/Reuters âPeople were yelling at each other; the public was getting at each otherâs necks,â Mr. Laking said. âYou get to the gate, and it was just pure chaos.â These extreme backlogs have resulted in several [interventions from the federal government](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRktRFhP4REAWh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmNhbmFkYS5jYS9lbi90cmFuc3BvcnQtY2FuYWRhL25ld3MvMjAyMi8wNy90aGUtZ292ZXJubWVudC1vZi1jYW5hZGEtYW5kLWFpci1pbmR1c3RyeS1jb250aW51ZS1jb2xsYWJvcmF0aW9uLXRvLXJlZHVjZS13YWl0LXRpbWVzLWF0LWFpcnBvcnRzLWFjcm9zcy1jYW5hZGEuaHRtbD9jYW1wYWlnbl9pZD01MCZlbWM9ZWRpdF9jbmRhXzIwMjIwNzE2Jmluc3RhbmNlX2lkPTY2ODA4Jm5sPWNhbmFkYS1sZXR0ZXImcmVnaV9pZD03NzY3NDk1MiZzZWdtZW50X2lkPTk4NzEwJnRlPTEmdXNlcl9pZD1hYTQ5MWVmN2YxZDk2NGU0OTc5ZmI3ODRlNzRlMDFkN1cDbnl0Qgpir2GM0mLbXDixUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MEBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~) and thousands of flight cancellations in Canada, while airports around the world are grappling with the same sort of problems as travel volumes rebound.
