This week weâre taking aim at a few of the words and phrases that we find bothersome when it comes to race. Some of the terms we chose also have entries in The Timesâs [Manual of Style and Usage](. Weâve included the manualâs recommendations when appropriate.Â

So a friendâs boss asks her to work on a study involving black patients. The friend is black and her boss is white. And the boss later becomes concerned about what she might think about his assigning her to the project.Â
He calls her into his office, stammers a bit and then ensures her that he did not give her the assignment because she was âethnic.â
What makes a black person ethnic but a white person not?Â
On the one hand, this is about the normalization of whiteness -- if youâre not white, then youâre something else. On the other hand, it speaks to how uncomfortable some people are to even discuss race. Someone more at ease with talking about race would have known that she wasnât âethnic,â she was just black.
[Stylebook says: ethnic. Use the word freely as an adjective (ethnic group), but not as a noun except in direct quotations. The political coinage (white ethnics) is condescending.]

âPeople of colorâ is too close, in my mind, to âcolored people,â just a small grammatical shift away from a term tainted by the ugliness of segregation. I know itâs now commonplace, and that itâs used with the noblest of intent. But white is a color too so everyone is technically of color, right?Â
[Stylebook says: people of color. Except in direct quotations, the expression is too self-conscious for the news columns. Substitute a term like minorities or, better, refer to specific ethnic groups â black and Hispanic authors, for example.]

âIllegal immigrantâ implies that the immigrant is illegal in the same way that drugs are illegal, and it creates a misleading framework to talk about immigration. Yes, there are millions of immigrants who entered the country illegally -- though there are millions more who entered the country legally, but overstayed their visas.
Illegal immigrant -- and its infamous companion, illegal alien -- are negative in nature and intent. Using them stigmatizes the subject and prevents us, all of us, from seeing the man or woman behind the label. It is pejorative and purposely demeaning because it criminalizes the person, not the act. To normalize its use is to give people license to offend.
[Stylebook says: illegal immigrant. may be used to describe someone who enters, lives in or works in the United States without proper legal authorization. But be aware that in the debate over immigration, some people view it as loaded or offensive. Without taking sides or resorting to euphemism, consider alternatives when appropriate to explain the specific circumstances of the person in question, or to focus on actions: who crossed the border illegally; who overstayed a visa; who is not authorized to work in this country...Illegal immigration, because it describes the issue rather than an individual, is less likely than illegal immigrant to be seen as troubling...Do not use illegal as a noun, and avoid the sinister-sounding alien.]

Multiracial people are often defined by their fractions - âhalf white,â âhalf black,â âa quarter Native American.â The math is convenient but inaccurate, suggesting a personâs identity can be sliced into clean, separate boxes. In reality, itâs all part of one unified, messy experience, defined more by the sum of its parts than by its divisions.

Donât call me non-white, non-Jew, non-black. âNonâ feels like a wall. Meant to clearly delineate what is and isnât but it feels like the most alienating description you can make of a person and an awful way to define a relationship. You are so not, youâre non. Devoid of any character especially the one youâre non of.

Whenever candidates of color are being considered for positions or jobs, one question repeatedly comes up: Will they fit in? This drives me crazy as it becomes apparent that âqualifiedâ gets replaced by âfitting in.â We aren't hiring for a sorority house. We want to hire the best qualified!

If youâre a woman, youâre used to the male gaze. But if youâre a woman of color, something else also happens. Youâre forever described as âexotic.â You know, the moment when your skin can only be fussed over as âmochaâ or âcinnamonâ or âcaramelâ? Brown works just fine, thanks.
I do remember one especially egregious moment when I was 20. It was my first night in a study abroad program in London; my first time out at a real English pub. There was a much older (white) man at the bar, whose stare remained squarely on me.
He eventually did approach me, and asked the dreaded question: âSo, where you from?â I said America, New York City. âNo, but where are you from, from? Youâre just so exotic looking!â After barking out, âI am not a damn peacock,â he knew to move on. âExoticâ isnât a compliment. A simple hello and a smile would do much better.

âDiversity hireâ is, in most contexts, used to define someone who is not white. Racial diversity is critical, but the term âdiversity hireâ or âdiversity candidateâ carries more weight than that and suggests a particular individual or group of individuals were hired because of their identity (and were perhaps not the most qualified), rather than their qualifications and identity.
