It was a dream (except for having to write daily notes in my awful Japanese about how our kids were doing). Most other industrialized countries have a system of pre-K and day care like that, but the United States never developed one. Now we have a fighting chance to get something like that, modeled in part on the excellent system of day care centers established by the U.S. military. President Biden’s next big spending proposal (which may be broken in two) is expected to include a continuing assault on child poverty, plus national high-quality pre-K and affordable day care (costing no more than 7 percent of household income). This would be a huge step forward for working parents and for America’s children, especially disadvantaged kids, and it’s a model that has been proven around the world and in the U.S. military. (I avoid saying “gun control” because that immediately antagonizes much of the U.S. population; better to use terms like “gun safety” and “gun policy” that are harder to be against.) The model is automobiles. We have learned to live with cars but make them safer and limit access to them in ways that have reduced the auto fatality rate per 100 million miles driven by more than 90 percent. Likewise, we’re not going to ban guns in America, but we can curb access and make them safer in ways that could plausibly reduce gun deaths in the U.S. by one-third, saving more than 10,000 lives a year. A Note from an Inmate in Sing Sing Prison There have been few worse policy failures over the last half century than the sevenfold increase in the number of people imprisoned in the United States. And along with mass incarceration, we also in some cases reduced educational opportunities for inmates. It has now been a year since we’ve been able to attend any educational courses here at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. I realize how invaluable educational courses are to incarcerated people. The vast majority of incarcerated people come from communities that are plagued with crime-generating factors like poor education, lack of meaningful career opportunities, and other social ills. As a society we need those that are currently incarcerated to come home as assets. There is simply no better way to ensure they do than to give them a quality education and viable skills while they are in prison. I remember graduating with honors while receiving my associate degree from Sullivan Community College in 2014, and the sense of fulfillment I felt made me want to continue to do and be better. In my conversations with my peers, I found they all shared similar feelings. Our families and professors stood by smiling with pride. Our lives had been transformed. When incarcerated people are afforded an education it opens us up to an entire new world, which helps us understand that where we are doesn’t have to define what we can become. Education provides us with options and helps us change the way we think and live. We are now graduates, students, scholars, and time is serving us. We develop a vision for our lives and acquire cultural capital to navigate mainstream society. This replaces old crime-generating attitudes with life affirming values and productive behaviors. MBS has done many terrible things, including presiding over the murder and dismemberment of my friend Jamal Khashoggi, but turning Yemen into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis may be the most costly. I’m still haunted by the children I saw starving to death in Yemen — and by the knowledge that my tax dollars, as an American, helped pay to starve those kids. The U.S. under both Barack Obama and Donald Trump supported the Saudi war in Yemen. President Biden has, thank goodness, cut off sales to Saudi Arabia of offensive military weapons, but the U.S. is still maintaining the warplanes that are bombing kids and maintaining the quarantine that causes families to starve. It’s not just the Saudis. The other side, the Houthis in northern Yemen, are repressive and recalcitrant. And the war has so splintered Yemen that it’s not clear it can be put together; one beneficiary has been Al Qaeda. More broadly, extremism always flourishes when school is suspended, stomachs growl and guns proliferate. The Yemen catastrophe is another reminder that the Biden administration should be sanctioning M.B.S. in part to reduce the prospect that he succeeds his father and becomes the Mad King of Saudi Arabia. What I’m Reading Robert Paarlberg, a food policy expert at Harvard, has written [a provocative book](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRiPkvsP0TyaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cucGVuZ3VpbnJhbmRvbWhvdXNlLmNvbS9ib29rcy82MDY4NzMvcmVzZXR0aW5nLXRoZS10YWJsZS1ieS1yb2JlcnQtcGFhcmxiZXJnLz9jYW1wYWlnbl9pZD00NSZlbWM9ZWRpdF9ua18yMDIxMDMyNCZpbnN0YW5jZV9pZD0yODQ0OSZubD1uaWNob2xhcy1rcmlzdG9mJnJlZ2lfaWQ9Nzc2NzQ5NTImc2VnbWVudF9pZD01NDEzMCZ0ZT0xJnVzZXJfaWQ9YWE0OTFlZjdmMWQ5NjRlNDk3OWZiNzg0ZTc0ZTAxZDdXA255dEIKYFjsxltgz-vJnlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTBAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAA)called “Resetting the Table: Straight Talk About the Food We Grow and Eat.” I find it interesting because he isn’t ideological and throws cold water on widely held progressive and conservative beliefs alike. He is skeptical of the emphasis on locally grown food and argues that food deserts aren’t so much of a problem as the way food companies have figured out to market unhealthy foods so that we will buy them. He’s making me think, always a good thing. So Why Do I Write So Much About Children? It’s because of what I’ve seen in the area where I grew up and am now while writing this: Yamhill, Oregon. As I’ve written, more than a quarter of the kids on my old school bus have died of “deaths of despair” — drugs, alcohol and suicide. Just as I was writing this, I got an email about a friend who lost her boyfriend to an overdose and has now tumbled into the abyss. Taxpayers spent large sums incarcerating my friends or policing their homelessness, and the money would have been far better spent when they were children, putting them on a better track. That’s what we have a chance to do now. The measures Biden proposes aren’t silver bullets, but they will help. They are an investment in our kids’ future, and in America’s. The question isn’t whether we can afford to make these investments, but whether we can afford not to. Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
