Collectively, those photographers — the only Black members out of 76 in the history of the photography department — have 250 years of experience at the Times. Here is a bit about the photojournalists, and a signature photograph. Don Hogan Charles During rush hour on July 16, 1980, one subway rider cooled herself with a fan as she waited for a train. A walk through New York City streets felt like a stroll through a steam bath on that day, as residents sweated through 99 degree heat.Don Hogan Charles/The New York Times Don Hogan Charles was the first Black person to be hired as a staff photographer for The New York Times. Mr. Charles had a range of assignments and a great skill in capturing everyday moments of city life, like the image shown above. But he was most known for his photography in the civil rights era. His coverage of the Newark riots and his images of Harlem in the 1960s brought a perspective on the subject that the Times had been missing. But his most famous photo of that era — an iconic image of Malcolm X peering out from a window, holding an assault rifle — was taken for a different publication, Ebony magazine. The image has been imitated, parodied and used to illustrate the struggle of Black Americans. Mr. Charles was modest about having captured that image, and at his funeral in 2017, a relative wondered why it was included in a slideshow of his work. “Your uncle took that picture,” another attendee informed him, to his astonishment. Jim Wilson Martha Graham, a giant of modern American dance, surrounded by her airborne company, as they rehearse "Maple Leaf Rag" on Sept. 7, 1990. For years, this image was displayed in the lobby of The New York Times.Jim Wilson/The New York Times Jim Wilson was hired by the Times as a photographer in 1980 and later became a picture editor and director of the photo department in 2003, before returning to the position of staff photographer. She was an extraordinary dancer and choreographer who inspired people all over well into her later life. I was in awe meeting her and having the opportunity to photograph her.” Michelle V. Paul Burnett Yankees pitcher John Wetteland, his arm raised, celebrates with teammates the team’s World Series victory over the Atlanta Braves at Yankee Stadium in 1996.G. Paul Burnett/The New York Times G. Paul Burnett, who is retired, captured many notable moments in his 21 years at the Times. Among his most famous was an image of John Wetteland, a retired pitcher for the New York Yankees, being rushed after the team’s World Series championship win over the Atlanta Braves in 1996. “It happened so quickly that I thought I was shooting a video,” Mr. Burnett said, reflecting on the series of photos. Then-executive editor Joe Lelyveld loved the selected photo from the take so much that he nominated it for a Pulitzer Prize. While it didn’t win or become a finalist, the moment itself was immortalized on merchandise produced for the Times store. One year later, Mr. Burnett’s photograph of Cleveland’s win of an 11-inning game against the Baltimore Orioles in 1997 was the first photo printed in color in the Times. Jeffery Salter Photographer Eric Kvateck wears limited edition clothing. He is modeling a jacket and shirt by the company called ‘Post’ which has a store in N.Y.C. And wearing vintage Levis pants. In Some frames he is outside his midtown loft on a window ledge wearing Nike (1995) Air Max sneakers as well.Jeffery A. Salter/The New York Times Jeffery Salter had the briefest tenure of the nine Black staff photographers hired by the Times. Only on staff from 1999-2001, he specialized in portraiture and continues to do so in commercial and advertising work today. Ruby Washington Bicycles that double as works of art were on view at Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan in 1995.Ruby Washington/The New York Times Ruby Washington was the first Black woman to be hired as a staff photographer for the Times. She began her Times career as a photo lab technician and worked her way up by freelancing on the side. In this photo, above, Ms. Washington captured bicycles as art at Grand Central Terminal. “Cycles of Expression,” the Southern California Institute of Architecture’s show of 32 bikes, took visitors back to the days of childhood, when trying to tame a two-wheeler. Ms. Washington passed away in 2018 after a struggle with breast cancer at the age of 66. Tyrone Dukes Norman Tate jumping in Van Cortlandt Park, trying to “make the other guys realize you’re tough to beat."Tyrone Dukes/The New York Times Tyrone Dukes was the second Black staff photographer to join The New York Times. “I was in awe of the guy,” said Fred Conrad, a retired staff photographer. He said Mr. Dukes, who joined the Times in the early 1970s, had an impressive knowledge of camera gear. He knew Mr. Dukes, an Air Force veteran, was an excellent photographer when he saw him sporting Leicaflex cameras around his neck. Mr. Duke’s work during the 1977 blackout in Manhattan was especially noteworthy to him and further demonstrated his skill. Mr. Duke’s time with the newspaper was cut short by an illness that contributed to his death in 1983 at the age of 37. Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
