Kelly/Daily Progress, via Associated Press Why Constance Young Will Always Be an Activist As Americans continue to protest systemic racism, showing up at rallies and demonstrations day after day in many cities across the country, the motivation for sustained activism is both personal and informed by one’s community. How do people keep going? What galvanizes them? For Constance Paige Young, who was among the counterprotesters injured in Charlottesville, Va., three years ago, after a white man drove his car into the crowd, killing one woman, it is a moral obligation to continue showing up. “I don’t believe there’s any facet of my life that’s been untouched,” said Ms. Young, 37, about the aftermath of the deadly Aug. 12, 2017, protest. “I’m not someone who is an adrenaline seeker or who is looking for a thrill. I am a human being who felt morally compelled to show up there.” Ms. Young, who lives in Washington, D.C., was among the crowd protesting the Unite the Right rally, organized by white nationalists who descended on Charlottesville after the city decided to remove a Robert E. Lee statue from Emancipation Park. Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency, deeming the rally unlawful, and the police and the National Guard cleared the area. Soon after, an avowed neo-Nazi plowed into a crowd of counterprotesters, injuring many and killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer. She said members of her family eventually moved to states like California or Illinois to both escape the racism they endured in Louisiana and pursue economic opportunities. Their moves shaped her decision to also leave the state, she said. “I don’t totally feel comfortable living in the United States. It doesn’t feel like a place that’s safe for me,” she said. “When I was a child, David Duke ran for governor of the state, and this was the first time in my life where I can remember feeling an immense anxiety in my body when I would go to sleep at night.” A still from the documentary on Investigation Discovery.Investigation Discovery Ms. Young also attended an international boarding school where making friends from other countries taught her that she could choose where to live — and that it could be anywhere in the world (she has since lived in Spain and Sweden, among other countries). Plus, she learned to challenge people’s assumptions about America and began asking people to educate themselves on aspects of American history, like the origins of policing. I want people to see who’s doing the anti-racism work within their own communities.” Ms. Young’s mother died a few months after the attack in Charlottesville, and the family buried her at what they soon realized was a segregated cemetery. “I felt a lot of anger. I felt a lot of grief, and it’s really hard to put in words, but I felt like despite the progress that African-Americans have made, there’s so much more that we need to do,” she said. She maintains they had to stick close together, and that she had to be especially careful as a Black woman in Charlottesville with so many people armed with long guns. She went prepared with goggles and she didn’t wear contact lenses; she wore close-toed shoes and packed a change of clothes. Constance Young in Charlottesville, Va.Investigation Discovery Following the car attack, Ms. Young was anxious when it came to attending protests. She participates differently now. She holds up the back, she said, doing things like providing bottles of water or snacks and doing her best to keep people safe. She hasn’t shied away from being an advocate, though. “One of the things that I’m most proud of in my life is planning a rally in Washington, D.C., on the one-year anniversary of the attack. It was called the ‘Still Here, Still Strong Rally,’” she said. “A small group of people from Unite the Right had their own march and rally in front of the White House and received a police escort on the Metro to get there but there were thousands more of us.” She understands that a lot of white people, with the right intentions, want to help but don’t know what to do. But she’s wary of “well-intended white saviors,” who want to get involved to alleviate their guilt. It’s the last thing this current movement needs, she said. “White people, in particular, should have their own reckoning with their participation in upholding white supremacy and then come ready to do the work because Black, brown and Indigenous people of color, we can’t fix this on our own,” she said. “We need people at every level. We need them in the boardroom. We need them at schools. We need them in governments,” she continued. While Ms. Young said the world she imagines may not be realized in her lifetime, she has hope that she can play a role in moving society — and future generations — in the right direction. “I feel hopeful because we can lean on each other and we can inspire each other and we can help each other. We can really change our future,” she said. “I’ve had so many opportunities because people helped my dad and mom. It’s at this very community level, this local level, where we really impact individual lives.” EDITOR’S PICKS We publish many articles that touch on race. Here are a few you shouldn’t miss. Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
