That photo above is of my wife, Sheryl WuDunn, and me covering the Tiananmen democracy movement in China in 1989. We were then the Beijing correspondents for The Times, and it was thrilling to see millions of Chinese fill the streets in hundreds of towns across the country, demanding greater freedom. Hope filled the air. Yet what followed still haunts me. Every year at this time, my mind slips back to the terrible night of June 3-4, 1989, when I stood in Tiananmen Square and watched the Peopleâs Liberation Army mow down protesters with automatic weapons fire.
One moment the protesters were full of youthful anger, idealism and yearning, encouraging each other to step forward and challenge the troops. The next moment they were crumpled lifeless on the pavement of the Avenue of Eternal Peace.
In [my column](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRe1VZwP0R4aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubnl0aW1lcy5jb20vMjAxOS8wNi8wMS9vcGluaW9uL3N1bmRheS90aWFuYW5tZW4tc3F1YXJlLXByb3Rlc3QuaHRtbD90ZT0xJm5sPW5pY2trcmlzdG9mJmVtYz1lZGl0X25rXzIwMTkwNjAxVwNueXRCCgAicNHyXDESaUJSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjkwQGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAA~~), I tell of the bus driver who tried to protect the students by parking his bus across the old airport road, to keep the truckloads of troops from massacring the students. An officer held a gun to the driverâs head and ordered him to move the bus. And at that the driver took the engine keys and hurled them into the bushes that lined the road. Yes, there was savagery that night, but also heroism â read [my column](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRe1VZwP0R4aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubnl0aW1lcy5jb20vMjAxOS8wNi8wMS9vcGluaW9uL3N1bmRheS90aWFuYW5tZW4tc3F1YXJlLXByb3Rlc3QuaHRtbD90ZT0xJm5sPW5pY2trcmlzdG9mJmVtYz1lZGl0X25rXzIwMTkwNjAxVwNueXRCCgAicNHyXDESaUJSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjkwQGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAAA~~) to encounter a bit of both.

- And itâs always inspiring to see [âTank Man,â](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRe1VZwP0QraHR0cHM6Ly93d3cueW91dHViZS5jb20vd2F0Y2g_dj1ZZUZ6ZU5BSEVoVVcDbnl0QgoAInDR8lwxEmlCUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MEBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~) the anonymous figure who stepped in front of a column of tanks and forced them to halt. (People often ask me what happened to Tank Man. We donât know, largely because we donât know who he was. My guess is that he disappeared into the crowd and that the Chinese authorities donât know who he is either.)
I once lived in Hong Kong (with the most beautiful view I will ever have in my life) and have been saddened to see China crush the cityâs free spirit. The publisher Bao Pu [has had trouble releasing books](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRe1VZwP0RuaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmxvb21iZXJnLmNvbS9uZXdzL2FydGljbGVzLzIwMTktMDUtMzEvY2hpbmEtcy1zd2F5LW92ZXItaG9uZy1rb25nLXJlYWNoZXMtaW50by1jaXR5LXMtYm9va3NoZWx2ZXNXA255dEIKACJw0fJcMRJpQlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTBAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAA) critical of the Chinese government in Hong Kong, and thereâs a growing sense that a city that survived so much is having its freedom squeezed out of it.
The Tiananmen slaughter happened 30 years ago, but remember that one is unfolding now in Syria, in Idlib Province. More than a quarter million Syrians [have been displaced](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRe1VZwP0RwaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubnl0aW1lcy5jb20vMjAxOS8wNS8zMC93b3JsZC9taWRkbGVlYXN0L3N5cmlhbi1ib21iaW5nLmh0bWw_dGU9MSZubD1uaWNra3Jpc3RvZiZlbWM9ZWRpdF9ua18yMDE5MDYwMVcDbnl0QgoAInDR8lwxEmlCUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MEBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~) in the last month, and the world seems to have barely noticed.
North Korea has [executed](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRe1VZwP0RKaHR0cDovL2VuZ2xpc2guY2hvc3VuLmNvbS9zaXRlL2RhdGEvaHRtbF9kaXIvMjAxOS8wNS8zMS8yMDE5MDUzMTAxMTI2Lmh0bWxXA255dEIKACJw0fJcMRJpQlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTBAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAAA) several Foreign Ministry officials who prepared for the failed Hanoi summit with President Trump, according to a South Korean newspaper, Chosun Ilbo. Note that this has not been confirmed, and that reports about North Korea often donât pan out. But there does seem to have been some kind of a purge, based on the disappearance of officials from news reports, and the episode is a reminder that North Korea is like no other country in the world. When this is what happens to senior officials, imagine what happens to farmers in the countryside who offend the authorities. I firmly believe that we should engage North Korea through a diplomatic process, but Iâm skeptical that a one-on-one friendship between Trump and Kim Jong-un is going to solve the problem.
Speaking of Trump, so much has happened in the last few days: White House officials apparently tried to hide the U.S.S. John S. McCain destroyer during his Tokyo visit to avoid offending him; new files suggest that administration officials lied about the purpose of a citizenship question on the U.S. Census, when in fact it was meant to amplify the political power of whites. And now Trump is promising to impose tariffs on Mexico because of Central American immigration through Mexico. This is damaging to the economy and absurd: Trump is proposing to tax Americans because heâs mad that his policies have backfired and amplified Central American immigration â but mostly heâs probably just trying to change the subject from other bad headlines. (Iâve been in Guatemala on my annual win-a-trip journey, so stay tuned for some reporting on immigration issues!)
Another day, another mass shooting, this one in Virginia Beach. Folks, we can't prevent all shootings, but we can reduce their number. There are sensible, pragmatic steps consistent with the Second Amendment that we can take that have broad public backing. [In this piece](~/AAAAAQA~/RgRe1VZwP0R8aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubnl0aW1lcy5jb20vaW50ZXJhY3RpdmUvMjAxNy8xMS8wNi9vcGluaW9uL2hvdy10by1yZWR1Y2Utc2hvb3RpbmdzLmh0bWw_dGU9MSZubD1uaWNra3Jpc3RvZiZlbWM9ZWRpdF9ua18yMDE5MDYwMVcDbnl0QgoAInDR8lwxEmlCUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MEBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAAA~) I outline such a public health approach, tackling guns the way we do cars, and suggest specific steps forward.Â

Anna Fifield of The Washington Post has for years been an outstanding reporter across Asia.
