You’re likely aware of the numerous book bans and challenges that are taking place in schools, libraries, and communities across America. Often, these banned books are those that explore race, religion, and history and center people of color and LGBTQ+ voices. Take, for example, the novels of Toni Morrison, winner of both the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes. Few books have inspired and moved readers more than hers. And few books have been as challenged, and, at times, banned. Last month, during The New York Public Library’s annual Banned Books Week, an all-star line-up of writers, actors, and thinkers honored Morrison’s work at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture with readings, performances, and in-depth conversations about her masterwork Beloved. Both Beloved and The Bluest Eye—indelible works—are available right now with unlimited access through The New York Public Library's free e-reader app, SimplyE. Making banned and challenged books available to all is just one way the Library stays true to its mission to provide open access to information and knowledge—a mission that is directly opposed to censorship. P.S.: Throughout her career, Toni Morrison was a champion for the power of reading and an outspoken critic of censorship and book bans. In honor of that legacy, weâre making two of her classicâand frequently bannedâtitles available for unlimited checkouts on our free e-reader app, SimplyE, through October 31. --------------------------------------------------------------- Government funding pays only a portion of The New York Public Library's operating expenses.
