The Hanging Gardens of Carroll Gardens

Design editor Wendy Goodman takes you inside the city’s most exciting homes and design studios. [Design Hunting]( A visual diary by Design Editor Wendy Goodman [A Tree House for Two Architects]( Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem built the indoor-outdoor “Mini Tower One” extension of their Carroll Gardens home. Photo: Michael Moran “This project had been in our studio for a while,” says Phu Hoang of he and his partner in life and architecture, Rachely Rotem, with whom he founded the firm Modu, about their trying to figure out how to expand their Carroll Gardens two-family home. What they finally came up with during COVID they call Mini Tower One, a slightly taller addition extending the rear of the original building that fits on it like a big backpack. On the second floor, off their bedroom, the indoor-outdoor extension has large windows that can be opened to allow an all-weather experience or be closed off with weatherproof floors and outdoor furniture.
