  Friend, this may come as a surprise⦠While grains have been the FOUNDATION of the US governmentâs food pyramid since 1992, theyâre actually terrible for you. In fact, theyâre the main dietary source of whatâs called anti-nutrients. Youâve probably already figured this out, but while nutrients are substances that nourish plants and animals to grow and live, anti-nutrients earn their title because they block the absorption of nutrients â especially those required for strong, healthy bones. If that sounds bad, itâs because it is⦠And most of the grains you consume contain THREE of the worst anti-nutrients for your system. 1.) Lectins: these âsticky proteinsâ interfere with the absorption of calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc. Lectins are also closely linked to a condition known as âleaky gut.â Since they often attach to your intestinal wall, your stomach lining is compromised, allowing food particles (and waste) to slip into the bloodstream⦠Trigger an inflammatory response & digestive distress⦠And lead to symptoms like nausea, diarrhea and bloating. While lectins are not completely avoidable, grains are chock full of them. In fact, out of ALL the food groups, itâs grains (and especially oatmeal) that contain the most lectins. This is why I recommend you stay away from oatmeal and [choose nutrient-dense foods with lower lectin levels]( for breakfast. 2.) Phytates: humans are completely unable to digest phytates. If only that were the ONLY problem. Phytates also bind to minerals (magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron) in the body. By binding to these minerals, phytates make those minerals unavailable and flush them out of your body before you can use them. If youâre concerned about your bone strength, focus on avoiding this anti-nutrient especially. Phytates leach calcium from your system that was destined for your bones. 3.) Gluten: a protein which causes an allergic reaction in some people (up to one third of the population). It can cause a wide variety of issues including vomiting, bloating, stomach pain, and diarrhea⦠yikes! In those with Celiac disease, eating gluten flattens villi (tiny, finger-like feelers in your small intestine that absorb nutrients from your food) and makes them unable to absorb ALL nutrients effectively. Unfortunately even gluten-free foods, while better than gluten-full ones, still have the other anti-nutrients listed above.
