Plus, rare photos of the Beatles from Paul McCartney [View this email online]( [NPR Up First Newsletter]( by [Suzanne Nuyen]( June 15, 2023 Good morning. Concert lovers rejoice! Live Nation, Ticketmaster and other companies will pledge to eliminate "[junk fees]( today at a meeting with President Biden. Here's what else we're following. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is the latest Republican to declare his [intent to run for president](. He filed the paperwork yesterday and teased a "major announcement" during an appearance on Fox News. He's expected to announce his run during a speech at the Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute this evening. [: Miami Mayor Francis Suarez speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference in March at National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Md.]( Alex Brandon/AP 🎧 Suarez has rankled other Republicans in the past, according to NPR's Domenico Montanaro. On Up First today, he reports [Suarez didn't vote for Trump in 2020]( or DeSantis for governor in 2018. Montanaro says Suarez, who is Latino, has "had some issues with both men for their hard-line immigration policies." The FBI and SEC have opened investigations into Suarez for payments made to him from a subsidiary of a developer in Miami, according to the Miami Herald. Ҟ‘️ Keep up with the crowded GOP primary race with [NPR's tracker](. Fox News is warning Tucker Carlson to stop posting his new show, Tucker on Twitter on the social media site. The network says Carlson is violating his contract, which expires in 2025, after the presidential election. 🎧 NPR's David Folkenflik says Carlson "really wants a voice in the upcoming presidential cycle," and Fox wants to [sideline him and get viewers back]( on their side. He notes that neither side should want the situation to go to court because an earlier defamation lawsuit damaged Carlson and Fox's reputations. Tens of thousands of people from coastal areas of India and Pakistan are evacuating as they prepare for Cyclone Biparjoy to make landfall by tonight. NASA has called Biparjoy a "severe cyclonic storm," which poses a significant threat to densely populated areas throughout the region. 🎧 NPR's Diaa Hadid is a two-hour drive inland in Pakistan's Hyderabad, where she says she already [sees the effects of the cyclone](. She reports NASA points to unusually warm waters for the cyclone's intensification. Pakistan is still [reeling from floods]( last summer, and environmental activists say the country is a classic example of how people who have contributed the least to global warming face some of the harshest impacts of it. The Southern Baptist Convention voted yesterday to uphold its decision to [expel two churches]( led by women pastors. Nearly 13,000 delegates called "messengers" met in New Orleans to hear appeals from the expelled churches. Their vote was based on a document from 2000 that restricts the pastor's office to men. 🎧 On Morning Edition, NPR's Jason DeRose reports not all Southern Baptists agreed with the decision. One pastor [begged voters not to deny the appeals]( and said, "History will prove us wrong again if we approve this motion." --------------------------------------------------------------- Newsletter continues after sponsor message --------------------------------------------------------------- [John Lennon in Paris, 1964]( Β©1964 Paul McCartney In 1964, the Beatles toured U.S. cities and appeared on American TV for the first time. Paul McCartney had a camera with him, and his photographs from that time are on display for the first time in a London museum and a new book, 1964: Eyes of the Storm. 🎧 [See some of these photos]( or listen to McCartney talk about the "[whirlwind" time of his life]( on Morning Edition. --------------------------------------------------------------- [Three $100 bills laid on top of each other, slightly overlapping.]( Luis Robayo/AFP via Getty Images Nearly 80 years ago, the U.S. dollar usurped the British Pound Sterling to become the new international currency. It means the dollar is at the center of most global business. But other countries are [chipping away at its power](. πŸ’΅ Earlier this year, countries including China, Russia and Saudi Arabia started trading with other currencies: the Chinese Yuan and the Russian ruble. πŸ’΅ The recent debt ceiling drama made the U.S. and its currency look risky and unstable. πŸ’΅ America uses financial sanctions as a way to put pressure on countries. But too many sanctions encourage countries to seek other currencies for trade. --------------------------------------------------------------- [A UPS driver makes deliveries in Northbrook, Ill., on May 10.]( Nam Y.
