However, this isn't the first time that [missteps made by the police]( have led to tragedy during a school shooting. Even as the nation is still mourning the lives lost in Uvalde and Buffalo, more deadly shootings took place across the U.S. The country has seen [nearly 250 mass shootings]( since the year began. How do you pronounce Uvalde? The answer is complicated, and the anglicization of the name is just one example of how language became one of the [first true markers of Latinx identity]( in the U.S. The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack at the Capitol will begin public hearings this week, just days before the 50th anniversary of the Watergate scandal.
